Wonderful, Wet, Workhouse Weekend

Term has finished, the family were in Norfolk for the weekend. A cheap pack of chalks and stencils provided amusement outside on the patio, in the late afternoon whilst Dad and Grandad went to Beck's to get fish'n'chips. Friday night's sleepover was followed by Grandad's Legendary Pancake Breakfast.

Jess takes these Very Seriously. We used Great Grandma's Cherry Stoner to prepare a bowl of fresh cherries to eat with our pancakes.

Then Mum and Dad arrived and we went over to Gressenhall to the Museum. The girls loved discussing Workhouse life and dressing up as poor Victorian children.

We enjoyed a good lunch in the café [great discount for cardholders] then walked over to the farm to look at the animals and go for a ride behind the tractor. Then the heavens opened - just as we were outside, in the farmyard. Running to the cars we were soaked to the skin! Back to Cornerstones, where Grandad made hot chocolate, with marshmallows, and we changed into dry clothes and dressing gowns, and did some cardmaking...

I am very sad that Norfolk Museums Service has cancelled their "Guest Tickets" Scheme. Last year when we renewed our subscription, we were offered 15 Guest Tickets for £5 each. We used four on Saturday - saving £40 over the regular price of £60 for the family. We have used 13 of the tickets at various museums. They run out in September, and that £75 has already bought us £145 worth of tickets. NMS make money on their visitors in the gift shop and the café, but I cannot see families wanting to pay £60 for a day out...
Are there good museums near you? and are they expensive to visit?

  1. The girls look like they had fun, they are growing up fast. That is a pity about not continuing guest tickets at your local museum. We have a very good Museum in Bexhill. There is an entry fee but if you become a member it is reduced entry. Not expensive to become a member. My husband is a volunteer and does lots of local and military history research for them. Hastings nearby is FREE to enter their brilliant museum and art gallery. The local schools use both museums a great deal and both have very good schools support teams. Bexhill Museum also has an amazing Costumes section with a really wonderful collection. Regards Sue H

    1. These sound excellent local facilities .,in the 70s I spent four happy summers at a Baptist youth Holiday scheme, staying in Ancaster House School.

    2. We used to live near the site of the Ancaster House School in early 2000's. The school merged with Charter 's in the late 1980s which was another independent girls school and became known as Charters Ancaster School. That closed in 1995 and the buildings were demolished. There is a small private nursery school left called Charters Ancaster but it is not on the site of the old school which is now Bexhill College and the land also has some houses as well. Bexhill for years had lots of independent schools but now all gone. The Museum has loads of information on them all. Sue H

  2. We have many museums which a currently free but as many are managed by the local Councils, there is always a possibility that a charge will be introduced. Closing on 2 days a week is the current status at our local Museum. The girls look as if they had a great weekend with you and I love how busy they like to be. Sunshine back with us today so washing machine is busy. Catriona

  3. Our Museum has just had millions spent on a new look, but it's still covered in scaffold, so I havent been in yet. It was always a favourite place to go as a child.

  4. These are such good ideas for summer activities. I've been trying to figure out what else we can do with our littles and these ideas are exactly the kind of activities that we would love to do. Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Can I recommend you check out the "usborne activities " series of books. They have excellent easy to do ideas for children. Awesome books has a lot on its website [aweaomebooks.com]. Art, science, and themed books [fairies, castles, rainy day stuff] for kids 3-11.

  5. It looks like you had fun, despite the rain (which was probably welcome for the plants). We are a long way from any large museums, but we have excellent local museums run by volunteers, with some provincial funding as well as donations.

  6. Hi Ang! We have a live historical museum nearby and I think you DO have to pay but as I recall it isn't a lot. It looks like the grans had a very fun day!

  7. Looks like you all had fun together at the start of the school holidays. Museums that are run by the council generally do have a cost attached here.

  8. Lovely, fun activities for the kids (and adults, too). Most museums in my area charge an entrance fee and/or you have to pay for parking. But, some of the museums have a free day once a month, so, if you plan carefully, you can take advantage of those free days.
