A noun jade from the Spanish piedra de ijada which means flank-stone. Centuries ago, people believed this lovely green semiprecious stone would cure ailments of the flank or kidney.
The jade plant, crassula ovata. Also known as the money plant or friendship tree. Liz has a very large plant, in summer 21, just before Jess was born, she gave me a small cutting, I put it in a coronation mug . Look at it now, three times the size. I am quite excited by this growth.

How are your Christmas Cacti plants coming along?
Do you do the darkness thing, to encourage blooms on cacti and poinsettia?
Do you have any jade jewellery or ornaments?

I hope you have a coin in the mug under your jade plant. It will make sure you are never poor!
ReplyDeleteI'd not heard that one before
DeleteNo to the 2 questions. I have one of these plants that came from Mum also.

DeleteYour jade plant looks great! My jade plants are all in the garden.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find your Christmas cactus. I have one tiny cutting that M gave me; it, too, is in a pot outside in the garden.
As for jade, yes, I have some jade jewelry from when we lived in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
I'm sure it is beautiful!
DeleteI have a flowering cactus. It is a bit confused as it flowers when ever it feels like it😁. Neither Easter or Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI think you have green fingers. X
Jade green ? 💚
DeleteOur Christmas cacti have gone mad this year full of blossom. We have two pink one pale and one dark, an orange one and a very pale nearly white one. Two were gifts from neighbours when we house watched on separate occasions and the other two seemed to have been with us forever. We just keep them in the conservatory all year so no darkness for them. I also have a massive jade plant which was a tiny cutting 6 years ago and is now two feet plus tall and has been repotted four times and weighs a ton. That too is in the conservatory. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! I do miss having a conservatory, but no room for one here
DeleteMy Christmas Cactus produces beautiful orange flowers but it's a bit temperamental. Sometimes it floweres, sometimes it doesnt. My ex boss used to keep her plants back to get them flowering at Christmas but I let mine so what they want when they want!I had a fabulous money plant just before summer but it got infected through some cheapy compost I used to report it. I managed to take a couple of cuttings before it died completely which are coming on strong now.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that these cacti come in so many lovely shades. I hope your jade plant thrives
DeleteI don't have any jade except for a tiny jade turtle, from where I can't remember. My Christmas cactus plant is elderly and very damaged on the leaves, however it has a few flowers coming so I am not tempted to throw it out. I may buy a new one. I had a money tree plant but that died. I don't have much success with houseplants apart from Spider plants.Carole R.
ReplyDeleteIn our first flat , we had three macrame potholders, which held dangly spider plants, hanging at the bathroom window. Well it WAS the 1970s!!
DeleteI have an old Christmas cactus plant which originally belonged to my green fingered grandfather who died in 1988. It lives in the porch year round and reliably flowers for Christmas. I can’t remember when it was last repotted and do keep wondering if perhaps I should.
ReplyDeleteSue
That is wonderful. Will you take a few cuttings before you repot it?
DeleteI have a huge jade plant, almost four feet tall. It has tiny white flowers in the spring.Neighbours who have taken cuttings have so far not been able to get theirs to flower. I keep mine in the conservatory where it boils in the summer and freezes in the winter. But (touch wood!) it survives.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen one in flower
DeleteIf you Google jade plant in flower you can see the type of flowers mine produces.
DeleteAs you saw on my blog post, our Christmas cacti has gone mad this year, she's full of blooms, and there are even more now than on that photo. She's always in full light as she sits at the glazed part next to Alan's front door.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I once had a tiny jade cat but I have no idea where it is, perhaps in my memory box ... now THAT sounded strange!!
Glorious [the plant, not the disappearing cat. Do you call it Schroedinger?]
DeleteI brought home two sad looking Thanksgiving cacti from my mom's when she passed away. They have thrived here and bloom not just at Thanksgiving, but last through Christmas and the one actually reblooms at Easter! I keep them next to my windows and water them about once a week. I've repotted them twice, but other than that haven't done anything else with them and they bloom every year.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lovely story, what a beautiful memory of your Mum
DeleteMy little Christmas or maybe Thanksgiving cactus is still developing. My house cleaners gave me it and I expect they like to see how it's coming along. I repotted it and it's putting out new leaves so I'm hopeful. It has pink flowers when it gets around to it.
ReplyDeleteLovely
DeleteNo jade jewellery, but a jade plant bought as a tiny cutting from a charity stall, but now thriving as sitting in full light on the dining room windowsill. My Christmas cactus is flowering (a bit early) and that is on the kitchen windowsill. I water them sparingly, but haven't re-potted them yet. Xx
ReplyDeleteGetting the watering right is so important
DeleteI inherited a piece of jade surrounded by Chinese? characters. I should get it translated before I donate it, it's a pendant. It belonged to my mother in law.
ReplyDeleteWhen we had our lower level remodeled (after a flood) the handyman was named Jade. I think he was of Mexican descent and he told me he had 5 daughters ( no sons) four of the girls were named after gems but his wife stopped that after #4! JanF
Oh yes, do get it translated. We knew a family of 5, four had unusual Irish Gaelic names - and the 5th was called Mary!
DeleteNot jaded, but in a prolonged lupus flare which = no energy. I have read a lot of books while sitting, but am very behind in my sewing. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteLove your healthy plants and wish you well, my friend!
Hugs!
Oh I do hope you feel better soon 💗
DeleteI have a small pair of jade earrings, a present from my mother. Everyone in Singapore had similar jade earrings!
ReplyDeleteI've never owned any jade jewellery
DeleteI have a poinsettia that sits in the dining room near the window and as we don't have the lights on in there except for meals, it does have restricted light. It never makes it for Christmas, but a few weeks afterwards it has the most beautiful red to brighten the winter days.
