Shopping At The Showground

Last Friday [7th] Julian arrived at lunchtime, as Bob got back from the Hospice. We had a quick snack then drove off to the Royal Norfolk Showground arriving at 2pm. The tickets were reduced after 1.30, which was a pleasant surprise.
We had much fun walking around the many stalls - some outside, some inside the exhibition building, and a few in a large marquee.
What can I say about the event? It was much as you would expect, a real mixture of stuff, ranging from overpriced tat which you might find at half the price on Romford Market, to handcrafted artisanal products made with care from quality materials, also costly, but perhaps better value for money!
And in between some middle range stuff, and lots of foodie gifts, with enthusiastic stall holders plying visitors with samples.
Bob and Julian were channelling Homer Simpson...
Chutneys, oils, chocolates, almonds [almonds are the best nuts] fudge, cheeses...a veritable banquet. And tiny sips of whiskys, fruit gins, and other drinks for those who like that. We sat outside with large cups of flavoured hot chocolate.
I did not feel the need to purchase vintage cutlery stamped with twee messages "Grandad's porridge spoon" "lovely grub" etc. So many of the items had spelling mistakes! Nor did I splash the cash for a pair of waving Santa legs
We chatted to some interesting stallholders, and some who may have been related to Del and Rodney Trotter. There was a woman selling Primark pyjamas [with just ½ the label cut out] and another 'Norfolk Crafter'with "handmade ornaments" with the 'made in China' labels still on the bottom!  Lots of food stalls, with wide choice of menus [burgers, fries, pizza, donuts, curries, cookies, etc] And at the end of the row, 3 open fronted tents set up for selfies - Enchanted Forest with sleigh, Fairyland, and Royal Palace. A kind passerby took our family picture
Altogether a fun afternoon out. A much drier Friday than yesterday. All three of us bought a present ir two. But I can't reveal what!

  1. Ah yes, those 'locally made' souvenirs....! The booths for selfies looked fun.

  2. The selfie booths were great for families and groups of friends...and they were free

  3. What a great idea to have selfie booths and that’s a lovely photo of you, Bob and Julian. I’m not doing any Craft Fairs because I can’t compete with tat and other stallholders hate that you are doing it for charity. My outing on Wednesday gained £107 for my two charities from a group of older ladies who were happy to buy some of my handmade things. I do a craft group for them once a year for free and then they have a browse around my makes. Now winter here and I got soaked walking home from the shops yesterday in sleety rain and my hood just would not stay up! Happy weekend. Catriona

    1. It's a little disheartening sometimes. Well done for raising that much for your charities

    2. Well, technically, the ornaments probably were handmade - in China. Just like baking frozen raw muffins is sold as “baked in store” or using a cake mix is called “home baked” because that’s where you baked it!

  4. That looks like a nice afternoon out. I always feel slightly guilty sampling the wares but not wanting to buy the usually overpriced offerings. Handmade items are wonderful but sadly although I would love to be able to support the genuine makers, I just don't need anything these days. Hot chocolates, free selfies and a couple of thought out purchases sound like a good way to show your support for the event.

    1. I think the majority of our purchases were edible gifts - because we don't need more 'stuff' to collect dust

  5. The spelling mistakes are a dead giveaway! And the made in China labels on the handmade local artisan's items.. You seem to have had a good day one way and another, with secret shopping.

  7. We have just come back from a winter fair at a small local village all proceeds going to a children's charity. Only 30 stalls all local people and all truly hand made here. It was lovely. I love your photo with Bob sitting on Santa's throne, very festive. We had some tasty home made spiced pumpkin soup for lunch which was delicious and incredibly reasonably priced. I also saw my old head teacher there, and it was great to catch up. I haven't seen him in a couple of years despite only living about 5 miles apart. Regards Sue H

    1. No thank you. Why do people think Santa's bum sticking out of a tree is appropriate decor for one's lounge ?

  9. Edible gifts are always good, and the selfie booth was a great idea. There is a Winter Food Fair here in Belper tomorrow, where they close the main street for all the stalls. Hopefully the weather will be kind. Off now to check on daughter's cats, as they are visiting the other grandparents. Xx

    1. A surprising number of stallholders yesterday appeared to be from the East Middlands [Derby/Notts/Leics]

  10. There is something incredibly sad about decor incorporating Santa's kicking legs!
A craft and food show is always better with family or friends, and I think you came away with the best when you had the photo taken. The hot chocolate sounded good, too!

  11. A friend visited Wales a few years back, and brought me a small holder for a tea bag as a souvenir gift. Plastic, with made in China on the back. Thoughtful of her, but unnecessary.

  12. Nice picture of you, Bob, and Julian in the selfies tent! I'm glad you were able to get your tickets at a reduced price and you were able to get some gifts. Food gifts are usually appreciated and they don't add to the clutter we all tend to have!

  13. It sounds like you had a good time at the Norfolk showground even if some of the stalls were not selling anything you wanted or needed. The selfie tents were a good idea though.
