For Christmas, I got the London family an annual pass for MathsWorld
This is a new venture, not far from Tate Gallery, with lots of activities and immersive experiences to help children [and adults] discover about maths. Liz took Rosie and Jess on Sunday. The girls really enjoyed themselves, climbing into pyramids, creating bubbles to stand in, solving puzzles etc. They were quite excited to tell me what they had seen and done - and Rosie explained it is on two floors, so they hope to go again and try out even more of the activities. I'm all for anything that gets people doing maths - and whilst it might be relatively expensive for a one-off visit, that ticket can exchanged for an annual pass. 
Maybe if I am staying in London, I might be able to go with them. I'm sure Jess will enjoy explaining everything to me. It is a certainly good venue for a wet Sunday afternoon. I think we will get our money's worth- and I hope the girls might become as fond of maths as their Grandma! They have just opened another site in Leeds

That is such a fabulous gift Angela and I think it’s brilliant that the ticket can then be switched to an Annual Pass. I’m sure the girls would love to take you along the next time you visit. Pip has inherited her Dad’s maths brain but I always joke I’d much rather write an essay than sit with a load of maths problems 😂
ReplyDeleteWhen Ben and Pip were small we took them to visit Eureka Museum at Halifax and that was a fab day out, I’m pretty sure Rosie and Jess would love it xx
I think it will certainly prove good value for money. I have heard that the Eureka Museum is good. George and Jacob live The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (that one is free entry)
DeleteThat's a useful, stuff-free present! It's good there are experiences like that. This year is the year of reading, as there's such a worrying lack of literacy skills amongst young people so it would be great if there were a, reading equivalent too.

DeleteWhat a great gift. The girls look like they are having fun. I have to admit to not being a numbers person, much prefer words. Thank goodness my Husband is good at maths and always told our sons "numbers are fun" and they took him at his word and always enjoyed maths lessons. I do recall a teacher once showing me how the nine times table was magic and that has stayed with me. Regards Sue H

DeleteThis is wonderful. I've never heard of such a place. Getting children interested in maths is so important, and too many girls are still told it's not a subject they'd be good at.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, it has always been difficult for girls to get on in maths. When I started teaching maths back in 1977, I was the only full-time female teacher in a large department in a big comprehensive school
