I love giving, and receiving, slightly quirky gifts. Nothing expensive, but things which are just a little out of the ordinary, somewhat unexpected. And there are always friends and family members for whom buying gifts can be a challenge. Charity Shops can be absolute treasure stores for such objects.
One of my best gifts was Christmas 2008, when my SIL gave me a vintage wooden knitting needle holder. It is still in use to hold needles.
It was even repurposed as a Policeman's truncheon in a school production of Wind in the Willows!
I came across something else the other week, which seemed a good gift for a family member. It is a boomerang! The enclosed booklet explained that boomerangs have been found across the world, not just in Australia - citing a gold-tipped one in Tutankhamun's tomb, and another found in Poland, fashioned from a mammoth's tusk.
I suspect this was previously given as a gift, but not really used, hence its arrival in the CS [The British Red Cross Shop, St Benedicts, St Norwich - always full of wonderful stuff]If the recipient is not happy with it, I guess he could try and throw it away - but with a boomerang, you never know...

I have never persuaded them to come back when I throw them... so I guess I'd have no problem throwing it away!
ReplyDeleteThe enclosed book gives lots of throwing advice (chiefly to practise in a large space where there are no other people around!)
DeleteWhat a fun gift and I also like to give and receive quirky gifts. Catriona

DeleteBoth my sons got sent boomerangs from their Australian cousins one Christmas when they were boys. Despite instructions how to use them they were never able to get them to arc back. Still they had lots of fun trying in a local field. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteFields and deserted beaches are good spaces. Cities are not optimum practice areas
ReplyDeleteOur son gave us an Australian boomerang on a home visit about 15 years ago. I've never tried to use it but it's pinned up on our cork board by the computer so that I can look at it and think of him when I'm composing emails.
ReplyDeleteA lovely reminder πͺ
DeleteYep, he might be throwing it away for some time!!
ReplyDeleteMy brother bought my eldest son one back from Australia when he was about ten, frustratingly we could never get it to come back to us ... so perhaps he will be able to throw it away after all . ;-)

DeleteDo you remember Charlie Drake singing, My Boomerang Won’t Come Back, in 1961?
ReplyDeleteOh yes .He was an odd little chap, wasn't he?πͺπ
ReplyDeleteI remember Charlie Drake singing My Boomerang Won't Come Back, I think its what they called a 'novelty' song. Xx

DeleteI love the needle case! The boomerang looks like an amazing gift. The best gifts, in my opinion, are things that aren't obvious, but full of thought. They come with more meaning.
ReplyDeleteAgreed!
DeleteInstead of thinking of songs about Boomerangs not coming back, I somehow found myself remembering a song, "...the cat came back, the very next day, they thought he was a gonna but...."
