A few weeks ago, I treated myself to a pair of noise cancelling headphones. They have proved useful in lots of ways - helping me relax, enabling us both to sit in the same room, but listen to different music,
they are brilliant for listening to radio plays when the sewing machine is humming, and also managing my tinnitus.
So much has been happening in the last month. Some good, some bad, some joy, some sadness.
- Huge things, global issues - wars and wildfires.
- Political turmoil, comings and goings,
- Burnham and Binface, and more.
- The deaths of famous people, ordinary people, and friends and family I know and love.
- Unexpected illnesses.
- The Tunnock and Tardis at the Commonwealth games,
- Punch the Macaque [look him up]
- Happy moments with the family,
- Unstoppable, enthusiastic grandhildren
Sometimes these things can overwhelm us .The strapline on the ad for my headphones says "Tune the world out" and I confess there are days when I want to do just that. Singing this hymn to myself helps...
What calms your soul?

Deep breathing.... 'in with the good, out with the bad...' those headphones look useful...
ReplyDeleteSo comfortable, and getting used far more than I'd expected. These are Sony CH-WH720N (bought on offer from Argos) Not the cheapest on the market, but reliable, with all the facilities I want. "Buy well, buy once"
DeleteThat is the hymn I love best. We had it sung at my foster Dad's funeral and my Grandfather's too. Both wonderful men. Music calms my soul always, and a walk in countryside, or looking at the sea. Regards Sue H

ReplyDeleteYour post reminds me why I don't always mind going deaf. I can ignore the things I can do nothing about.
ReplyDeleteLove it!
DeleteNorrie wears the headphones in our house and we can sit together in harmony. Mindfulness is my calming help and some handstitching of course. Catriona
ReplyDeleteHand stitching always brings my heart rate down
DeleteA little meander around the garden is very calming. My garden is my solace. I have a chat with my plants, admire them, tell them they;ve done well, pick a few tomatoes......and feel better.
ReplyDeleteAnd your garden is the perfect place for that
DeleteI needed that hymn this morning, thank you. It was one of my favourites, always on the rotation at school assemblies.
ReplyDeleteI think a pair of those headphones might be just what I need for when we move, otherwise I will be banished to the bedroom to read in peace when Alan is playing his loud music.
Get a pair EACH - a pink one for you and a navy one for him, so he can link up via WiFi and hear his music without disturbing you. [Bob has susbsequently acquired a navy set]
DeleteA beautiful hymn.
ReplyDeleteI often listen to BBC sounds to calm me for sleep.
I suffer from tinnitus too. One of my favourites is found on the Slow Radio series. Podcasts of Benedictine Monks, talking about prayer, silence etc, working and interspersed with beautiful chant. Equally gardeners question time helps me nod off too π

I prefer to listen to GQT when I am awake enough to take in the information - although the recitation of Latin Plant Names is soporific I agree
DeleteMy very favourite hymn - often sung when I was in the church choir many moons ago . Thank you for that - I will be singing this to myself all day now ! Regards Sheila.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful
DeleteThis is my favorite hymn. JanF

DeleteSo good to hear that hymn with the "right" music! I first heard it in school and I always loved it. We had fewer verses though.
ReplyDeleteWe are all fussy about favourite tunes- I agree with you on this one
