Maybe I should just regard them as completely new stories, set in a new period, but the two main characters just happen share the same names as in another story! I notice that a high proportion of the writing/production team are female. I wonder how much of a difference that has made? The secret adversary should be just after WW1 and N or M is during WW2. It's the usual problem of being very familiar with the books and then seeing the TV version.
