Once Upon A Time …

…there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter. Miss Potter wrote about them 110 years ago.

And last week saw the publication of

peterrabbit further

emma_thompsonIt was written by the amazingly talented Emma Thompson [she’s a mother, she acts, she writes, she wins Oscars…] who was asked to do this by the publishers Frederick Warne [who tempted her with an invitation containing a  half-eaten radish leaf!]

You can find out more here and even more here. Having watched the video clip and listened to Emma reading an extract, I think I would definitely like a copy of this one. I am usually very picky about ‘follow up’ books, and sometimes feel that they do not do justice to the original author [I loved PDJames take on Austen, but not so sure about Susan Hill’s attempt at Du Maurier]

Emma does have an impeccable pedigree – her dad was Eric Thompson, who wrote and voiced the Magic Roundabout series back in the ‘60s [using the films which were imported from France]

This one is on my Christmas list!

…and don’t worry, Liz and Steph – our original BP collection is intact. Whatever else may be leaving the house during the Great Loft Clearance, those volumes are staying! So many happy memories of my little girls snuggled up on the sofa in their red dressing gowns sharing bed time stories with me.

  1. We heard about this on the One Show the other day and heard Emma talking about it all - I must admit to putting it on my wish list in my mind!

  2. I wasn't sure about this, as like you, I sometimes feel that the original magic has disappeared with a 'follow up'.
Maybe I'll have a look at it though.

  3. Beatrix Potter is essential reading for English girls I think..no matter how old they are.

  4. Emma Thompson may be the only person I'd trust to do this right. Can't wait to have a look!

  5. And the illustrations look delightful. (The cover illustration reminds me of "The Little Prince".)

    Miss Thompson is a wonder.
