Conversation at the breakfast table this week
Sweetheart, are you wearing a new perfume?
No! I don’t have any new perfume. Why?
I can smell something…erm…vanilla…no, it’s coconut. I can definitely smell coconut
Is it you? I mean, is it your dressing gown?
Don’t think it’s me…
I sniffed his d/g [that’s the freshly laundered and refurbished one]and we agreed it was neither of us making the scent- but it was definitely stronger on his side of the dining table. Then we realised
IT WAS THOSE FIG LEAVES IN THE FRUIT BOWL!
Those lovely fig leaves from last week had wrinkled and shrivelled
Not only had they lost all their colour, they smelled incredibly strongly of coconut! I found another blogger who has commented on this strange phenomenon, so it is not just my tree that has this fragrance. The leaves have been relegated to biodegrade outside.
How bizarre!
Gosh, that's really interesting! I love the smell of coconut - gorse bushes, for example, smell so lovely!
ReplyDeleteIdeal for use in a pot pourri bowl.

I've just planted a fig tree, in fact re-planted it as well, as someone told me it needed to be 'controlled' so I've replanted it in a larger pot than it was originally, so it doesn't run into the drain.
ReplyDeleteWe visited a house in deepest Yorkshire Wolds last week and there was a HUGE one, on a sunny wall. Sadly the many figs on it hadn't ripened due to lack of sun.
Did you manage to find that book I mentioned? If not, let me know and I will send it to you.
Oooh, how nice! I have a fig-tree so I must experiment with this!
