Time On My Hands

In the heart of the city is a shop called Samaritaine. It is the fashion store, and has been for decades

Bob decided we really ought to visit. Apart from anything else, my watch broke recently, and I was wondering about a new one. One with hands to tell the time - no fancy step counting, heart rate monitoring etc. I went up to the floor where the watches were. A very kind lady discussed my choices, and whether I wanted a leather strap or a metal bracelet. Having encouraged Bob and me to sit down at the lower counter, she put a pair of black silk gloves, unlocked the case, and laid two wristwatches on a green baize tray.
She helped me try on the one on the left. The right hand one cost a little more, but came with a second, gold bracelet, so you could change it up for special events. The left hand one was just under €2000. But with the discount [Mother's Day Weekend] and the refund of VAT for foreign tourists, it would only be €1475. That's around £1250. I thanked her, and said they were both attractive, but we would go and have a coffee and think about it.
I didn't have to think too hard - do I look like a woman who wears a €2000 watch? In 1974, Samaritaine had an award winning ad campaign featuring King Kong.
They are celebrating the 50th anniversary with a replica of KK's hand. You can pose in its terrifying grip. So I did

And what about getting a replacement watch? I now have a lovely Sekonda, with a metal bracelet, proper handsa sweep second hand, and the date. Bob spotted it in the RSPCA CS on Friday. So I guess you could say it has a second-hand second hand.
It cost 1% of the French watch - just £12.50
And it ticks [and tocks] all the boxes. I am utterly delighted with it!
[Thanks for spotting it at the top of the glass cabinet, Bob]

  1. Ah, well done for finding a bargain! It is v stylish! I found a beautiful Olivia Burton watch in our local charity shop a while back which was a total bargain of £20 as opposed to their RRP and is so pretty with tiny gold flower filigree! Kx

  2. I can never understand the attraction of an expensive watch. Our daughter and her husband have several each yet frequently take out their phones if you ask the time!! My little cheap Fitbit is my only watch just now as I need a battery in my only watch. Catriona

    1. So many people seem to have expensive watches stolen, is it worth it? Someone in my family was mugged and their watch was taken

  3. You look properly terrified in that picture, gripped in KK's hand. :D Looks like you found a lovely watch at a fraction of the cost of that new one! :)

  4. £2000 for a watch?! Madness.
The CS watch is a great find and much more reasonable too. Plus a charity benefits, good find Bob.

  5. The King Kong advert is hilarious. What a good find in the CS. I recall visiting Samaritaine but just looking it was mouth wateringly expensive. Regards Sue H

  7. A good find.
I have put my Winnie the Pooh watches in the hospice shop and use a rechargeable Fitbit.
Is it me or do the watch batteries go much quicker? Long life ones last about 6 months. I know I look frail, but I expect a couple more years at least.

    1. It's a long time, since I had a watch with batteries. The manager of the CS said they put new ones in before they go on sale - so I will wait and see if this is still going at Christmas

  8. I had a good laugh at the ad, so clever of the store to make one like that! Your watch will always be a reminder of the " time" you searched for one "en Paris!". JanF

  9. Many years ago I bought a watch for $10 Australian in a market in Sydney. It was great. Eventually the strap wore out and although it is not difficult to replace a leather strap, it is no longer possible to pick one up in various stores. So one day, in the big city back home, I was near a high end jeweller's, the kind where you have to buzz and be let in! I asked for watch straps and without batting an eye, the gentleman fitted a lovely leather strap to my cheap watch for only $17 CAD. I really appreciated that he didn't look down on my humble transaction. One day if I ever need to buy some diamonds I will return! 😻

  10. I admire your nerve at trying them on in the shop! I'd hate to have an expensive watch as I'd be terrified to wear it.

    1. To be honest, she was a very determined saleslady, I think she thought once it was on my wrist, Bob would buy it for me!!
