Never Mind The Quality, Feel The Width

Older readers may recognise this as the name of a sitcom from the late 1960s. It involved two men [one Jewish, the other an Irish Catholic] who ran a tailor's shop. It was definitely not politically correct, and we did not watch it in our home. But the saying - allegedly deriving from East End businesses who were seeking to sell their customers shoddy merchandise, came to mind recently when I bought some fabric.

In Dorset, I used to go to Fabricland  - this was a good source of inexpensive cloth for play costumes, curtains and dressmaking.

They have an online store, but I have not used them since moving to Norfolk. Recently I discovered Pound Fabrics. They're in Birmingham. I ordered a couple of lengths of fabric, and was very pleased with the efficiency of delivery, quality of cloth, and value for money.

My latest purchase was a grey safari print in organic cotton poplin. It was the work of an afternoon to make another little dress with pockets for Jess.

The fabric cost just £3 and was lovely to sew. The binding came from my stash - an unopened pack of Aero tape - originally costing 9p! I bound the neckline, armholes and pocket tops. I used a fancy stitch for hem and pockets, and an 'overcast' foot to help neaten seams and raw edges.[more new skills learned on my new machine]
It is so sweet. Let's hope Jess loves this as much as her pink dress.
If you do dressmaking, where do you buy your fabrics?

  2. That dress is adorable! I'm sure Jess will love it.
I tend to buy fabric from a store here called JoAnn Fabrics. I usually wait until they have a clearance sale and then buy the sale items. But, I haven't bought any fabric since the pandemic. I don't sew that much, anymore, and I still have a fabric stash that needs to be whittled down. :)

    1. I've seen other US bloggers mentioning JoAnn Fabrics. My stash doesn't seem to have any "pretty little girl" dress fabrics in it!!

  3. Pockets are essential! Maybe try Etsy, there are a number of sellers on there who have pretty fabrics.

  5. What a lovely dress-takes me back to making these little pinafore style dresses for my daughter. It’s very difficult to find fabric shops and I am always delighted when I find some on holiday. Catriona PS Have signed up to the Pound Fabric site

  6. What a gorgeous little dress, she will love it, especially with it's pockets. :-)

It's funny, but I always get Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width mixed up with Nearest and Dearest, the series with Nellie Pledge and the pickle factory.

  8. It's so nice when you find a reliable online source isn't it. ( The little dress you made is gorgeous by the way ) I don't dress make but do occasionally use scraps of fabric for crafting, I went on Etsy and ordered some scraps by weight which were very good value indeed, I was absolutely delighted with them.

  9. I use Poundfabrics too, they seem to have a really good range of fabrics and haberdashery. I don’t have much time for sewing in the summer though, busy with the garden. I’m also trying to reduce the stash😏

  10. Even though I don't sew I can spend a very happy hour at JoAnn fabrics! I only make things like lavender sachets, serviettes and so forth. I love that , when you take the fabric to be cut to size they will usually ask what you intend to make and are genuinely interested. One lady even explained to me how to make a secret inside pocket into a jacket I'd bought for my mother!
    That's service!
Love the dress, and Jess will too. Do you sew dresses for yourself anymore? JanF

    1. Oh what excellent customer service. Apart from the man's shirt remade into a top a few months back, I don't think I have made anything for myself since lockdown. My wardrobe needs fewer clothes in it, not more!

  12. Thank you CC. I think I went into the Livingston Textiles Bridport Store once, when we were down in Dorset. Empress mills seems to carry a HUGE range of fabrics and haberdashery.

I have never come across Fabricland as it’s in the busy end of the county we avoid, but I may have to venture South.
    Thanks for the tip. Jx
