We have been working ridiculously hard to get the Kitchen finished by the weekend. And if all goes to plan, things should be tickety-boo by this evening!
Just a few teaser pictures for you.
We realised while using the Futility Room as a temporary kitchen, that it was so much easier having our plates and bowls etc stored there, right beside the dishwasher.
I spent Thursday unloading all those boxes which were cluttering up the back bedroom, and rearranging things in the new cupboards. It was so satisfying to keep adding another empty box to the pile.I found all sorts of random things in the boxes. Including a very warped and scratched chopping board. Why did I keep that. It has gone! on it was a post-it note, with one word [In Rosie's handwriting] working. What did that mean? Was she working, had she found a gadget which was working? Bob and I have certainly been working...The first things into a wall cupboard were my Marmalade Jars.
There will be a load of proper photos next wee. Watch this space.
At last you are almost at the 'completely finished' line, with an organised and thoroughly clean kitchen and futility room. It's been big job, but you seem to have worked so well together. 😃
ReplyDeleteWe are used to working together, the great thing has been how well the "pros" who came in to work alongside us , fitted in.
DeleteThink Rosie meant the chopping board was still functional ergo 'working'? Pristine line of cabinets there as well as the marmalade stock! Lots of hard work but the results speak for themselves. Hope you have a restful weekend.
ReplyDeleteHah!! The family are arriving for half term. So a brief respite before a busy week with them
DeleteSo exciting!! And it made you rationalise your crockery storage too!
ReplyDeleteAnd I've taken some good, but no longer needed, items to benefit the CS too.
DeleteGood to get to the end without a nervous breakdown!
ReplyDeleteIf your Futility room is now more useful you'll have to change the name - Usefullity?
No, the name will stay. I can't change it now!
DeleteWhat a clever idea to put the plates near the dishwasher. Looking forward to the grand reveal. Enjoy your new kitchen after everyone’s hard work. And relaaaaax! Catriona
ReplyDeleteStrange how after years of doing it one way, you suddenly realise a little tweak can improve things immensely
DeleteThe end is in sight, gold medal 🎖 to you both. How wonderful when completely finished. That is great to have all your crockery and glassware in a convenient space. The chopping board and cryptic post it note remind me of when we moved to this house 9 years ago. Some of the things written on boxes and items one end of the move made no sense at the other end. Some we just gave up on, moving/renovation can be very stressful. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteAnd why do post-its detach themselves, and reattach to the wrong boxes?
DeleteThere's not many folk of our generation that would tackle such a project by themselves - I admire you.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
It was now or never as we move into our 70s!
DeleteHave you ripped the protective plastic off yet?? It took me a couple of days to even notice it was there.
ReplyDeleteWhen you build-it-yourself you do it as you go along. I knew someone who wondered why the display on their new microwave seemed to be fixed at a particular figure whatever they did. Then they realised it was a black protective sticker with white digits!
DeleteHow quickly this seems to have gone, it appeared to me that it would be many months in the completion. You have both done very well indeed. JanF
ReplyDeleteWe started planning with IKEA the first week in January, and began the work at the beginning of March. After the flooring, plastering and plumbing had been done by the pros, we got on with assembling and fitting cabinets. We had a two week gap, waiting got the tiler to be available, he finished Tuesday evening and now all other jobs are done. So not a bad time frame for us, considering we were busy with a lot of other things as well.
DeleteYou have done so well to create this new kitchen and what a good idea to relocate the plates and glasses adjacent to the dishwasher.
ReplyDeleteWhy did I not think of this when we first had the property in 2009? I've been carrying plates backwards and forwards when I really didn't need to!!
DeleteYou have my unbounded admiration. To do all this yourselves and not have a nervous breakdown takes some doing! I get very stressed out with any kind of change including plain painting and decorating 🙃 I'm such a wimp 🫣

I know that it was working as a team that made it successful. And having a Project Book where tasks were written in order etc.
DeleteLooking forward to seeing the kitchen photos. Have a lovely time with family. Iris is having a sleepover Monday night and on Tuesday we are planning on visiting the Lego shop and the Oxfam bookshop and could we please have lunch out Granny, so we are going to her favourite cafe here called Nourish - very apt! Xx
ReplyDeleteOh do have a wonderful time!
DeleteWell deserved Congratulations 🌟
ReplyDelete👍
DeleteYay! The end is in sight! You'll have a gleaming new kitchen by the weekend with everything placed just where it belongs. I, too, have my plates, bowls, and glasses in the cabinet directly above the dishwasher (the serving dishes are in the adjoining cabinet, over the microwave).
ReplyDeleteIt is a sensible arrangement
DeleteAfter all the hard work building the new kitchen it will be fantastic to have it finished. Having that clear out of stuff before everything goes back is a good idea too. Sometimes finding a new place to store items makes perfect sense and we wonder why we never thought of it before. Your marmalade jars made me smile as I have some like that in my cupboard.
ReplyDeleteI do love my marmalade 🍊🍊🧡🍊🍊
