Last years #word365, proved a good choice - there were things which had a real impact on our world, and on our communities, as well as on ourselves.
And there were certainly many times where I was aware that my choices were making an impact on myself, my loved ones - and other people, and the planet. I was stuck for a word for 2026, and I had the germ of an idea, so I asked Bob. His suggestion chimed perfectly with my thoughts [which had been something about "putting things right"] He said "What about RESTORATION?" Perfect! thank you
There are lots of aspects of this - the dictionary offers these ideas
- the act or process of returning something to its original condition [by repairing, cleaning etc]
- the act of bringing back something that existed before [eg peace, a monarchy, a relationship, good health, animals in a habitat]
- the act of returning something that was stolen or taken
- [theological] the act of bringing a soul back to God
And so there seems plenty of scope here - I love The Repair Shop - the way things are restored 'to their former glory'."Please can you make it as it was when my Grandad first saw it?" they say, as they hand over the shabby cap, damaged instrument, smashed pot or filthy, painting. Sometimes just a little TLC, more often, hours of painstaking craftsmanship - but the team do create remarkable restorations. Mending, fixing, making things useful again - these are skills I enjoy practising.
Things that existed before - I am sure every one of you longs for peace in Ukraine. But there are other things to try and bring back. Four weeks ago, people in Norfolk were celebrating the sighting of a wild beaver for the first time in 500 years!

Personally I would like to restore my body to a slimmer, fitter state than it is right now.
I'm not too sure how restoring 'something stolen or taken' fits in with my personal blog. But I know issues will arise this year on that one.
The theological one - as a preacher, I love the opportunity to point people to Jesus - but also know that I must keep my own 'spiritual walk' moving in a good direction too.

Restoration is such a positive word! In what way does "restoration" resonate with you?

Restoration is a great word to choose. It implies a fidelity and a keeping of what's old but improving it. Not just throwing out and completely starting again.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of Gentle Gratitude as a word. I've felt very lost in the past year in my head and just wNt to focus on all the good in my life and how I cN respond to that
Last year was pretty turbulent for you (and C) Gentle Gratitude is good. Be gentle with yourself as well as with others! 💜
ReplyDeleteGreat word! I'm sure you will be responsible for a lot of 'restoration' this year.
ReplyDeleteI hope so
DeleteI think restoration is a very good word in all its meanings. I need to restore my fitness as I seem to have got into very bad ways in the colder weather. We are off to do the first large shop of the year and I must restock the cupboard with essentials-yesterday we ran out of washing up liquid!! Catriona
ReplyDeleteStill eating up Christmas foods, so no big shop just yet. I thought I needed w/u liquid, but Bob found a new bottle at the back of the cupboard yesterday.
DeleteIf Norrie had looked carefully, he would have found that we still had one in stock in the cleaning cupboard. C
DeleteI think Restoration is an excellent word for the next year. Having faced several intense years with family caregiving and looking at another year that will continue the same trend but in a new revised form, I'm going to take a cue from Kenzie. The word Gentle speaks to my heart. I'm going to be gentle with myself, gentle with others, and gentle with the world and its resources. Thank you for this thought-provoking post.
ReplyDeleteYes, be as gentle with yourself as you are with others. You will be of little use to others if you burn out. ❤️🙏
DeleteThe repair aspect of restoration really fits you already. Restoration is a very good choice in so many ways, varied with depth. I have been "good" over Christmas regarding eating and stayed pretty healthy also I have managed good long walks most days and done morning tai chi every day. However my husband has put on the weight he lost pre-Christmas, 3 kgs. Too many chocolates and way too much Christmas cake. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteI think I have eaten fewer chocolates this year, and more vegetables. My weight is stubbornly constant and still too high!
DeleteRestoration is a very good word, and a great choice for your coming year.
ReplyDeleteWe are currently restoring our future home, the bungalow has so many problems that restoring it to it's previous safer self is going to be very important, both for it and for our futures.
I'm sure you will take time to get it right. Cutting corners never works in the long run, does it?
DeleteWhat a great word! To me, restoration means God taking all that's broken around me and mending it and returning it to what it should be.
ReplyDeleteYes!!!
DeleteRestoration is a wonderful word. I hope to restore myself to being slimmer and fitter (won't be a Size 8 though), and have more time with family and friends. Xx
ReplyDeleteSize 8 in US is size 10 in UK. The pavements are very icy here, so not risking any walks right now
DeleteI like Restore. I can see a lot of things needing restoration around me! My word of the year is Wellbeing. My own spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
ReplyDeleteThat is a superb choice, Bless 💛
