I Spy...

Two SpecSavers Home Visit Vehicles outside two adjacent properties. Is this a case of Double Vision?

Yesterday was very busy, lots happening on the craft front. One thing I hadn't done for ages...
French Knitting.
I bought this little knitting doll in Flying Tiger a couple of summers ago, and meant to teach Rosie but then forgot.
Now I have a genuine reason for wanting to make some cords myself, so I sat and had a practice after lunch.
I will explain later!
The 2x2 project is progressing slowly. K and I are exchanging a lot of WhatsApp messages. I will be glad when the weather brightens up, it's cold and damp found here!

  2. I'm sure Rosie will enjoy learning how to make cords using that doll. :)

  3. My 2by2 has been racing along... it's a welcome distraction from what I ought to be doing!

  4. I used to do this at school! I wonder why it was called 'French' knitting?

    1. Apparently Les Tricoteuses, the women revolutionaries who sat knitting whilst the aristos were guillotined, used a similar (but larger) spool method to knit hats.

  5. My Gran used to make me a knitting Nancy from an old thread spool and some little nails. I was beyond delighted the year I got a painted one from a friend of Mum’s as a Christmas present. Happy and simpler days. Catriona

    1. I don't think I ever had a fancy one as a child - just a spool and four nails!

  6. Double vision? Very funny!
I remember doing French knitting and making coasters out of the coiled cord.

    1. I think many of us made a huge ball of coiled cord, then wondered what to do with it!

  7. This method of knitting dates back at least 400 years. Also called knitting Jenny, or knitting Nelly. It became very popular pastime in Victorian times

  10. I must look out for a knitting doll, there's a Flying Tiger in Derby and we're taking Iris in next week so she can pick her birthday present and having lunch too. Although she picked up knitting fairly quickly with 2 ordinary pins. Weather very wet and grey here, the culvert that runs down the estate is fairly gushing with water. Xx

    1. Some of their wooden toys are good value - the plastic stuff not so durable

  12. I remember doing French knitting as a child. I think my grandma taught me with a wooden cotton reel and nails in the top. I had a lot of fun with that.
