I was decluttering a file of household documents last week, and a delivery note fell out. With slightly strange wording
Delivery in the Close is usually done by the postman, the milkman, the supermarket chap, the meds from our surgery or the impatient Amazon//online guys. Nobody hereabouts is need of delivery by a midwife, nor 'ministry of deliverance' from the Vicar. So what is 'delivery 'by goodwill'?
I looked for further clues - it is from Neff, and 'these parts should be fitted by a suitably qualified person'. Then I checked the date [1996] and the address [Kirby Muxloe] and what these parts were...
Then everything made sense. In the spring of 1996, we moved into the new Manse [built 1992], which had a fancy Neff double oven with gas hob. But no operating instructions.
I contacted the company, and they said they'd send a set of booklets. This was the delivery note that came with them. I presume 'caused by goodwill' means 'we are not going to charge you for these'

Thirty years on, times have changed so much. Most manuals are available online. I've just passed my older Janome Sewing Machine on to a friend from the Craft Group. I could find all the accessories - but not the manual. It took less than 10 minutes to find it online and print it off for her.
When we left Kirby in 2015, I left all the appliance manuals behind for the next occupants! The phrase 'delivery caused by goodwill' sounds so friendly and charitable, doesn't it? It is always good to find helpful customer service departments.
Can you recommend any companies which go "above and beyond" ?

A friend recently had excellent service from an art supplies company in Dublin. They emailed her at every stage of preparing her order - very unusual these days.
ReplyDeleteThat is good service
DeleteThe only company I could think of would be Waitrose good delivery. They always asked if we wanted them to bring the delivery into the kitchen and if we wanted the crates unloaded. Back to doing our own shopping now but was very grateful for all the deliveries when we couldn’t do our shopping during and after Covid. Our local postie is also very good with mail and small parcels. Catriona
ReplyDeleteThe Waitrose/JohnLewis company has always been helpful for me too

DeleteI bought a frozen Indian meal and was disappointed with the pathetic amount of chicken in it. I sent an e mail complaint and the reply was really charming. They asked for batch numbers etc. but were very apologetic and in a very witty way. They promised to send me coupons for future purchases and one of those was for about triple the price of the meal I'd bought. I was so impressed that I emailed back appreciation for their response! ReplyDeleteThat sounds excellent service🍛
DeleteOur local Asda was outstanding during Covid. Someone packed our small order carefully, nothing bruised or going out of date. Substitutions were always something a bit better, carefully chosen. Occasionally something extra was added, a small treat. DH would collect it first thing from the empty car park.
ReplyDeleteMany stores worked really hard during COVID
DeleteAt first, I thought the delivery was somethinf from Goodwill Industries, which is a chain of thrift stores, here. :)

DeleteOops, that should be "something"! Need to proofread before I hit publish!

DeleteI always expect the worst when I call a company, but there are some lovely people out there, and I've been pleasantly surprised by kindness. It was still nice of them to send the booklets.
ReplyDeleteYes it was
