Three Minute Thursday #4 - Just A Few Words

It is surprising what you can achieve in three minutes. Last week I read somewhere that the average person can write 31 words [legibly] in one minute- that makes 93 words in three minutes.
But how much is 93 words?
Is it enough to fill a postcard?  If I have three minutes to spare, could I write a postcard to my elderly, housebound aunt? How many words are in the average address?
According to the word count facility on my pc, so far I have written 93 words up to this full stop.

That seems enough to fill a card. I reckon that the greeting [Dear Auntie etc] and closing [Lots of love from Ang & Bob] plus her address comes in at about 25 words- leaving 70 for a brief message.
Three minutes is quite a short time - waiting for the kettle to boil, or a TV advert break [if you are actually watching 'live'] sitting in the car while Bob goes into the bank...but the pleasure of receiving a card often lasts a lot longer.
I got out my trusty paper trimmer, and a box of old birthday/greetings cards.
In three minutes*, I had trimmed eight of them down to postcard size - 15cm x 11cm is a good size, you can use that as a postcard, or pop it into an envelope to be more 'private'.
But one of the cards was a square one, with flowers on it.
I took another three minutes, and reduced that one to a little stack of 6 gift tags with my tag punch.

You never know when you'll need to tag something!
Having spent 3 minutes preparing my cards, and putting stamps on them, they are all ready now for those odd moments when I can fire off a quick missive.
As all my holidays seem to be spent at Cornerstones these days, I don't really send holiday postcards any more. But I love random cards sent out of the blue and I am sure lots of other people do too.
*I set my timer to make sure I really did just spend three minutes.

  1. Ooh, yes. A few minutes spent writing note are a few minutes well spent. A hand written note brings so much pleasure.

    1. Since I made the cards on Wednesday afternoon, I found this morning that I needed the Thank You one immediately. So pleased it was on hand!

  2. As someone who constantly feels the need to be occupied I can always make use of the odd three minutes. When my three grown up daughters were living at home and we were preparing to all go out together I would of course be ready on time. My wife and daughters all looked ready to me also, but there was always 15 minutes of hypothetical busyness before we eventually got through the door. I would use this time to dip into Encyclopaedia Britannica.

    1. I always had a secret admiration for people who had EB on their bookshelf. It is wonderful what gems you can find, and nuggets you can learn in just a few minutes of reading a mine of information like this.

Your tag punch sounds and looks very useful, better than pinking shears.

  5. What an excellent use of 3 minutes! I often wash a few dishes or put away dried dishes in the 2 or 3 minutes it takes to boil water for tea. I like the idea of writing a postcard, better! Love your tag punch!
