Roll Up! Roll Up!

Twenty two pencil rolls prepared for the Pop-Up Shop. I used various fabrics from my Stash - Unicorns; dinosaurs; bicycles; tipis and a Peter Rabbit print. There are twelve pencils in each roll.

It costs around £1 to buy 12 pencil crayons in a cardboard box [I have been buying most of mine in Wilko's, currently on offer. I am not looking to make a vast profit, nor yet to charge for the time spent making them.

Here is my question - what do you think would be a fair price to charge for these? I cannot decide, and would appreciate your thoughts, dear friends.

  1. 22! Goodness you really were "on a roll".
No idea what people would pay - so I'm no help

    1. I just found 5 fabrics in my stash I thought might appeal to children and cut out as many rolls as I could. I didn't realise I'd got nearly 2 dozen!

  2. I’d go £3.50, based on similar items available.

  3. Those would make great gifts for children! No idea how much to charge for them - perhaps look online to see if others are selling them and see how much they charge?

  4. I can't sign in!
That's the sort of thing I would have bought for my friends' children, who are all in their 30s and 40s now. I reckon you could ask £4 each or three for £10 easily.

  6. I would have made them with a fold-over flap at the top to make sure the pencils couldn’t fall out if they weren’t tied tightly enough. Years ago I made cutlery rolls for my children to use at camp then made them for my husband and I when we became leaders. One dollar store tea towel cut in half and half a yard of binding tape for each one. Four lines of stitching on the sewing machine - made in minutes.

  7. I would say at least £3.99 or £4.50. That way they will sell fast but you will still make a reasonable profit.

  8. £4.50 sounds about right - folk seem to like getting a bit of change from a fiver. They are lovely, and I can imagine were a bit fiddly to make.

  9. I would say £5 if you want to keep it straightforward, or £4.50 if change giving is not a problem. They are lovely.

  10. Well done on producing so many pencil rolls. I am shockingly bad at pricing things and I think it depends on where you are selling them. I would probably say £3.50 to £4 even though I know the amount of work on them. I made 28 little wallets today as gifts for an older people’s group at my friend’s church. Yesterday was spec cases! 1. 👍 Nobody would buy them if the time spent was factored in. And as you say, where you are selling makes a difference.

  12. That is a great idea. Wish I could buy a few for gifts but I am across the pond.

  13. My daughter-in-law bought me one as a gift from her school xmas fair but no idea what she paid. Her friend made them with the flap that folds over the top. I keep my crochet hooks in them.
