One lemon, 1.8kg of FairTrade sugar and a can of MaMade
Cost - £3.40 – around 40p for a 370g jar.
Bonne Maman [even on offer in Sainsbury’s this week] costs £1.68 for a 370g jar. This lot should keep us going till 2013!
I love the way marmalade looks so golden and glorious with the light behind it, with the shreds of peel held in suspension. It reminds me of amber! Speaking of amber…
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
Happy Independence Day to all my friends in the USA!
We love Ma Made here too! I heard on a grapevine last year that it was being discontinued so I bought several cans of orange base which I still have, but it does seem to still be available. I noticed that Lakeland sell a version (Not the original) of this, and have various flavours, but haven't tried anything other than the original orange, which goes down very well on the morning toast for the FH. Like you say, it is so much cheaper than any bought marmalade. Well worth a stint in the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThat is very good value....and somewhat easier than chopping up all the fruit oneself!
ReplyDeleteWow! So beautiful, Ang!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the happy greeting for our great USA holiday!
Just yesterday, I bumped into our Kelli at the market and she was looking for marmalade to use in a recipe.
This reminds me of Paddington Bear.
Marmalade is pretty, but I'm afraid that I hate the taste of it! Blech!!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer marmalade to Jam . I like my own Strawberry Jam and crab apple jelly . Sadly no crab apples or Bramleys this year . T,V said the bees didn't pollinate due to the wet weather
ReplyDeleteGoodness me, Bonne Maman is well over $4.00 here. Much better to make your own beautiful preserves!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the grand 4th of July wishes. (I like this bit from the third verse: "America! America! God mend thine every flaw; confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law.")
Such a beautiful colour. I've never made marmalade.Did you get the Ma Made at S'bury's?
ReplyDeleteYes - on Monday it was £1.94 per can. I NEVER pay more than £2 and sometimes considerably less.
DeleteThanks Ang. I'm taking Mum tomorrow so will look out for it. Is it stocked near the preserves?
Deleteat the bottom of the marmalade/jam area near home baking in MY branch anyway!
DeleteI put the juice and grated zest of a lemon in with each batch of mine, and make it in my pressure cooker pan
Have fun!
What beautiful marmalade! Thanks for the warm July 4th wishes. Off to a cook-out!
