You Can't Always Get What You Want!

Here is the 2026 John Lewis Christmas Ad with Kristen Scott Thomas - it is the 20th one they have done. You can find a link to all the other 19 here. My favourite was 2011, the little boy who couldn't wait to give his gift. I confess to being in the NO group in my response to this year's offering. There are so many things about this that just don't hang together...

The family have obviously come a long way, so of course the first thing they will say is "I need the loo!" It is usually the first thing I say when I arrive in Manchester. And the usual response is "OK. Shall I put the kettle on, Mum?" That is not a sign your grandchildren do not love you, or are being rude. They do not want to wet their pants, and you do not want to have to shampoo the carpet.

Grandma KST is clearly rich  - I think she should explain to her family that they are very wealthy but a lot of people are lonely and hungry at Christmas. Perhaps she could invite her MI6 colleague Jackson Lamb round to share lunch with them - that would give the children a new experience, I think they would love him and his scatological sense of humour

I cannot say "what kind of granny fills a room with sparkly foil and twinkling lights then plays music loudly and dances about enthusiastically with the children?" because that is exactly what I did recently at the Church Funday. But I do think Christmas gifts require forethought.

I could go on, but I won't. My main gripe is that KST appears to live alone in a massive house in London and is extremely wealthy. 90% of the families watching the ad will not be able to identify with her lifestyle. I think the advertising team at JL have missed the mood of the nation.
Huge thankyou to Eleanor who alerted me to the lovely M&S ad. Where Santa SHAVES!!!

What's your favourite Christmas advert?

  1. I agree MandS have nailed it with their Christmas advert, James Norton and Lucy Punch, what a brilliant combo. Also middle class but silly and funny. JL was dreadful. I have yet to see a Christmas advert that shows people going to Church, singing carols , going for walks, the normal stuff that most families do, or is that just in rural outposts and villages, are urban areas more into shopping and greed. 1. Interesting point comparing urban & rural communities. So very proud of my 4 Yr old daughter in selfridges, 1980s. Santa asked "and what are YOU doing next Thursday? " She smiled and said loudly and clearly "Celebrating Jesus"' birthday! "

  2. Oh dear, that's awful.
That makes me a dreadful boring nanna, no sparkling room but I always have biscuits!

    1. Sue , you are a fantastic gran, you think of your littl'uns all year round, collecting bits and pieces at boot fairs etc. When the tribe arrive, there are many delights for them alongside the biscuits. They love you to bits, but KST didn't appear to have given any thought to the children till they arrived. Unconditional, ongoing oive beats a fat cheque book any day.

  4. M & S definitely wins over John Lewis! I didn't really "get" the JL one.

    1. Steph, who is in the business, says she thinks JL made a mistake in changing their ad agency a while ago...

  6. I too prefer the M&S advert, but I am made uncomfortable by the frankly lascivious comments I've seen on FB about James Norton. Mostly made by women. If similar comments had been made by men about Lucy Punch, then many of these same women would be up in arms.

  8. I caught a bit of the JL one and couldn't make head or tail of what was going on... I spotted an article on how you could recreate the glittery room for £100 though. If you wanted to. Which I don't!

  9. I have not seen any Christmas adverts so far but I rarely watch tv these days so cannot comment on the JL one or M&S either. I agree where are the ones showing normal people going to church, walking etc? The Salvation Army used to do some very good "adverts" in the past for their annual Christmas appeal and the proceeds were used for the homeless and families in difficulty. I worked for a charity at one time for families in crisis and every year we could apply to the SA and nominate families in need telling them how many people, ages of the children and they would provide appropriate and lovely gifts along with wrapping paper, tags and bows for them to be wrapped at home. I don't know if they still do that. Thinking of love and people less fortunate at Christmas is far more important than glittery rooms. I will stand down from my soap box now, sorry. Regards Sue H

    1. Just seen this year's Sally Army advert. Yes, the Sainsbury's advert is right when it says "nobody should miss Christmas" I do hope the SA, Crisis, Food banks etc are well supported this year.Do not apologise for your soapbox rant. It is a good one 👍💙

  10. I think the JL advert is awful, not too sure who it is aimed at and can not imagine my family allowing such behaviour! Yes I like the M & S one. Last years Amazon's advert Joy Ride makes me smile as do the Aldi ones.

  11. My absolute favourite advert this year is the M&S one. I just sat smiling the whole way through ... and James Norton as Santa is pure genius. I'm sorry to say but I am glad they finally ditched Dawn French's little fairy from the past few years, it was getting a bit weird.

Now M&S have really 'read the room' in comparison to John Lewis who are just throwing money at their adverts in a bid to make them memorable. Love, family, fun and games what's not to like with M&S this year.

  12. Agree that the JL one is just confusing and not appropriate somehow.
I look forward to seeing the M and S one

  13. I thought the JL Christmas advert was dreadful and the M&S one better. But do I really want a glitzy, glam Christmas thrust at me. Can't they do an advert that shows 'normal' families. Xx

  14. It's a very worrying advertisement. There's little love, affection or care in it and certainly no Christmas spirit. Bring back Hare and bear!

  15. I think JL really lost the plot with this one. Maybe they will ditch Saatchi and Saatchi for next year
