Here’s Ellen going home from church this morning with her flower basket balanced triumphantly on the front of her mobility scooter.
Tonight we had a good time at the Parish Church, and read from Psalm 126 [the Message]
And now, God, do it again—
bring rains to our drought-stricken lives
So those who planted their crops in despair
will shout hurrahs at the harvest,
So those who went off with heavy hearts
will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing.
Lots of people have commented on the Hopkins poem which I quoted earlier in the week – if you want to read his poem entitled “Hurrahing in Harvest” click here
I was actually applauded this morning at the church where I was preaching. I said that I recently read an article suggesting Harvest Thanksgiving Services were an anachronism in the 21st Century – but that I disagreed, and felt it was good and proper to thank God each year for another year of his blessings and bounty, and that the crops had grown. One chap started clapping [it turns out he is a farmer]
Quite righ too, how could anyone feel that we dont need to be thankful for all His gifts.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely photo.
Totally agree with you; God blesses us each and everyday.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! We are totally reliant on the work of the farmers and harvest and if God does not provide the weather, conditions, then we are stuck!
ReplyDeleteThat Hopkins poem is just wonderful! Doesn't he use such fantastic imagery - "silk-sack clouds"...perfect!
ReplyDeleteI agree too, that Harvest Festival gives us a time to focus on God's bounty - whatever it is and whatever that means for us.
Hurrah for Harvest indeed!
