The ladies who organise the Tuesday Club [coffee and cakes at the pub] decided to lay on a Garden Party as part of the village Jubilee Celebrations. We delivered half a dozen chairs to the venue earlier in the week - and then chauffeured our elderly neighbour to the event on Saturday afternoon. We followed the instructions and dressed in Patriotic Colours. There was a little confusion when we arrived. Our invitation had the wrong time printed on it, so we were late. Never mind. There was still a mountain of cakes left, and the cardboard cutout Queen stood smiling at the end of the garden. In fact most people didn't start leaving till gone 5, so we got to speak to a number of people. I met the Vicar, and the Editor of the Parish Magazine.
Barbara and I posed for our Royal Photograph. Thank you to the Three Jays [Joyce, Judy and Jane] for arranging the event. Here's two pictures from Thursday's event - the Piper, and the lighting of the Beacon. There does seem to be much less enthusiasm for this Jubilee than for the one in 2012. Perhaps people are just rather disillusioned with the Royals now - the media seems to delight in speculating about the William/Harry rift, and the behaviour of the Duke of York.
I shall take my bunting down soon...
I didn't get involved with any events mainly because we were up north and it rained hard during the events we WERE going to go to (ceilidh and lighting of beacon but also I was on holiday and enjoying a rest from crowds. Yesterday, I spent much of the day doing work and stressing about work/school. I just feel utterly gloomy about going back and barely slept a wink last night.x
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got up orth to see the family, Kezzie. But sad that school is stressing you out. I hope this remaining half term is easier!
ReplyDeleteI get the feeling that the Jubilee is just 'something to do'. I suspect that people are so stressed about the aftermath of Covid, Brexit, inflation and war that they haven't got room to think about it.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot to cope with right now, I agree
DeleteIt's great that you had such a nice party and could also enjoy a bit of Queen Elisabeth flair... what a personality for the world... I bow in reverence.
ReplyDeleteTakk skal du ha. jeg er enig, hun er flott
ReplyDeleteHave you met my lovely friends Meg and Dennis Ackroyd from the Swanton Morley Tuesday morning Coffee Group ? Meg and I are both members of the Dereham and District Mother's Union Group and serve on the Committee together . Dennis and I do family history as a hobby where we both have a lot of interesting ancestors , including in my research a Baptist bigamist and a great great grandmother who spent time in Gloucester jail and in Dursley workhouse.
ReplyDeleteOh yes! Meg is such a lovely lady, and Dennis a real character.
DeleteHow lovely to go to a garden party and dress up with hats and all! I'm glad the weather co-operated although I can see a lot of clouds in one of the photos. On this side of the pond there is only the news reports of the Jubilee to entertain us. I know of no celebration here at all!
ReplyDeleteit has all been good fun
DeleteSounds like it was a lovely garden party! As Bushlady said, on this side of the pond, there were only some news reports.
ReplyDeleteI hope they showed the good bits, like the Queen meeting Paddington Bear
