SLOE, SLOE, QUICK, QUICK, SLOE !
On Friday, Bob was delivering two Shed Aprons to a lady in the Retirement Community up the road, and she told him there were lots of sloes in the hedge by the footpath on the other side of the fence. Julian and I went on Saturday, armed with lok'n'lok boxes. But there is no longer access through the fence - just a padlock and barbed wire. We drove round the complex, hoping to walk up the footpath that way. But that appears to be closed off at the minute [we suspect part of the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone Project aka NOWZ]
Disappointed we went back into the village and down a lane where I found sloes a few years back. The bush was still there - but someone had picked it completely clean apart from THREE fruit. Never mind...
You have to be quick to get a sloe round here!
That will make a nice wee drop of sloe gin..... a thimbleful maybe?

DeleteCome here to East Sussex we have zillions. The hedges are full of them. I have two containers in the freezer in case next year is not so abundant. Two bottles of sloe gin maturing away in the garage. They are a good size this year too. What were you going to make with them? Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteBob liked the idea of some sloe gin at Christmas
DeleteHow disappointing! I hope you find more sloes in your neighborhood and can get more than just three!
ReplyDeleteIt is a good year, there will be some somewhere else
DeleteAren’t sloes just the most wonderful rich colour? What a shame you couldn’t get to them as they look perfect for picking. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI love the colour too
ReplyDeleteThe only edible thing growing in our new garden ( oops forgot the rhubarb) is sloes, so we are fortunate to have our Christmas sloe gin sitting quietly in the cupboard doing its thing!

I really do not fancy rhubarb gin
DeleteNigel Slater has some interesting alternatives using dried fruits at the beginning of Christmas Chronicles. I made a few potions for myself last year, and am acquiring the ingredients bit by bit.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting
DeleteYou have the best blog titles; thank you! ~ skye
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOh gosh, how frustrating. How naughty to completely wipe out all supplies, someone was very greedy!!
ReplyDeleteI was always taught to never take more than 50%, so you always leave some for others
ReplyDeleteI just read that sloes are very nutritious, so better luck next time you go looking for any. (not sure if they are nutritious in gin, but that would be even better!)

DeleteThat's a shame that both sources did not yield fruitfully for you.
