Keep Taking The Tablets!

What do you think of when you hear the word pillbox?

1 a box for pills, especially a shallow round box
2 a small low concrete emplacement for machine guns and antitank weapons
3 a small round hat without a brim with a flat crown and straight sides

Obviously, 2 and 3 got their names because they resembled the medicine containers. Swanton Morley had three WW2 pillboxes, including a listed "Pickett-Hamilton Fort" .

Situated on the runway, this is a retractable construction set in a concrete 'sleeve'. When the runway was in use, it was wound down to ground level, then wound up again to be used as a lookout/gun emplacement.
When I was six, I thought Jackie Kennedy was the most glamorous woman in the world, and decided that when I grew up, I would buy myself a pillbox hat and wear it proudly. 65 years later, I have to say I have yet to do this.
We never really had pillboxes at home, when I was growing up. My Mum had an array of brown glass bottles [later plastic] containing all her various tablets. Each one had a mysterious ball of cotton wool in the top. This was to stop the pills being damaged during shipping, and the practice began in the 1900s, but by the end of the 20th century pills were much less fragile. Nowadays all our pills come in blister packs. I wait till we have a bag full and take them to Tony at church, who recycles them for charity.
But last week I bought myself a real pillbox.  It was £2 on a bric-a-brac stall on the market. It is small and round, 4cm diameter, with a lovely enamelled Rennie Mackintosh design on top, and inside has three sections. It was just the right size to hold three days worth of my meds for the weekend conference. Isn't it sweet? It looked very classy on my bedside cupboard. I wonder if Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis ever had a pillbox like this?
Do you use a pillbox? Or a dosette box with compartments for the seven days of the week? Have you ever had a pillbox hat?

  1. I have boxes and tins to keep my current blister pack meds in - evening, morning, lunchtime and a 24 supply in my handbag. The actual packets fill the top drawer of my chest of drawers in the bedroom. I've never used a dose pack...

I wish all my pills fitted into such a teeny tiny box, but that's life. At least I don't have to think about whether I can afford them for which I am grateful.

  5. I don't use a pillbox regularly, but I have one with a pretty enamel top which was my Mum's. I took it with me when I had a night away recently.
I really wanted a pillbox hat when they came back into fashion in the 1980's, but somehow I never got around to buying one.

    1. Yes, Princess Di brought them back into fashion. But that was at the point when my income was rock bottom, and hats were an unnecessary purchase

  6. When I was a little girl my mum had a fur-fabric pillbox hat made from a piece her (fake) fur coat when she had it shortened. She was a very stylish lady and looked fab in it. I am not as stylish unfortunately and more likely to wear a woolly hat!

    1. My gran did that too! I wear baseball caps and woolly hats, and I also have a proper Tilley, more than 20 years old now

  7. We take our pills from the packaging even when we are away. I have a collection of decorative pill boxes featuring Clarice Cliff designs which I collected monthly from Bradford Exchange and now reside in the loft! Catriona

    1. We were advised to keep pills in packaging if flying, but I reckoned I was OK for 2 nights in Milton Keynes! Your CC ones sound fun. But you know you should get them out of the loft. Display them, sell them or give them away!! If it is a large collection, 10 or more, can you not get a little Christmas tree solely for hanging them? They would look so pretty!!

  8. When we go away, I use a container that was originally for crafting supplies - probably beads - which means each lid for each day opens separately from the others. I've labelled them for days of the week. It's more compact than the long ones that are usually sold. I recognise my
tablets, so I know which are morning and which
are evening pills. For every day use, I keep my morning tablets, in their blister packs, in a tin in the kitchen, to have with my breakfast, and the nighttime ones in the bathroom drawer with the toothpaste. The half tablet every other day becomes a bit more complicated, but I have a system of putting the half tablet in a tiny tin in the big tin, and putting an elastic band round it (not today) or taking it off (tablet today) I've got used to it now! Sorry, was that all a bit TMI ?!?!

    1. Well done. I find it reassuring that so many of us are on pill-routines. I wish there not so many side effects tho

  9. I have never had a pill box, but that new one of yours looks brilliant for weekends away in the UK. I just get my tablets out of their actual boxes every day, I take just enough to make this still manageable.
I don't think I could stand a pill-box hat balanced on my head, sadly I really don't suit any hats now that I have such short hair.

    1. I remember having a hat to wear for a wedding, and putting a strip of Velcro [fuzzy side, not hooky side] inside it to keep it on my head for the photographs!

  10. I used to think those pill box hats very glamorous, but have never owned one and the only hats I wear these days are to keep me warm or keep sun off . Your little pill box is very pretty and very useful.

  11. The only pillbox in my life was the iconic PanAm flight attendant hat. I discarded it when we changed uniforms but a friend kept hers and sold it recently for a lot of money on e bay! JanF

    1. Oh they were SO cool! I loved the Pan Am TV show. I always wanted one of the blue 'vanity cases' which the girls carried. I bet you looked great in your hat, Jan, alongside your smart husband
