fleecy beanies, fluffy bobbles, felted numbers, tweedy titfers, and earflapped jobbies.
"I've gone fully woolly!" she announced. Or should that be "fully wully" or maybe "foolly woolly"? It is a phrase which sounds better than it looks!
But I saw the definitive sign that autumn is on its way, as I stood at my kitchen sink the other morning, poking through the window to see what was happening in the Close.
3 - Naked Running Man was wearing a teeshirt and a woolly hat! [Obviously NRM is not his real name]. He appeared at the start of the summer. He runs a loop round the village, once, sometimes twice a day. We are the middle of the run, I think - like the dog walkers, he comes round the Close, then through the alley back to the main road, and back down the hill again. He is a young chap, always pushing a baby in a three wheeled "jogging buggy" But over the summer, he just wore trainers, a reversed baseball cap and running shorts. As he run towards you, the buggy in front of him, his shorts were obscured, and it really looked as if he was just wearing shoes and cap. All you could see was his trim, bronzed figure.[Remember those Diet Coke Break ads from the 1990s?] He is concentrating really hard, I suspect he is training for something. People who call out a cheery 'morning!" get a smile and a nod of the head, but he has no time [or breath] for conversation. I admire his diligence, especially now the weather is definitely getting autumnal. If he is preparing for a charity run, I would definitely sponsor him, he brings a smile to the morning.
What signs of autumn have you seen round your way?

The determined cyclist, a man who whizzes past our house twice on his daily circuit around the maze of crescents and closes nearby has added a woolly hat, long-sleeved top and gloves to his usual lucrative. With his helmet and goggles he looks like some kind of insect... I started noticing him in lockdown.
ReplyDelete"Lucrative"? Has autocorrect changed "circuit" there? Or do onlookers throw money as he rides past!?!
DeleteI think it change Lycra but perhaps you knew that really.
DeleteOh well done, I didn't think of Lycra!!!
DeleteI know it's Autumn when I open the curtains in the morning and all the car windows are covered in condensation. Even tho' it still gets warm during the day I know I cannot get in the car and drive away without first giving the glass a squeegee.
ReplyDeleteAgreed!!
DeletePs I have left a message on your blog this morning
Deletewith no shirt on no wonder you smile. Joanie
ReplyDelete๐ now he is wearing gloves ๐งค as well as a woolly hat
DeleteI have the set of the four seasons Ladybird books bought for me in my childhood by my grandparents many moons ago so old it was when Ladybird books still had separate dust jackets! Lots of spider webs in the garden bejewelled with rain drops, lots of sweet chestnuts on the ground on our walks in the woods, conkers too but not as many as usual, the birds are not singing as much just robins, a sure sign winter is on its way. No naked young men running round here, but there are quite a few slowly walking grey haired men! Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteThe original books with the Tunnicliffe illustrations are beautiful. I prefer them to the later editions
DeleteThe uppermost tips of the trees are starting to change from green to golds, reds, and oranges. Two nights ago we were expecting frost so lots of flower boxes and garden planters were draped with sheets or towels.
ReplyDeleteNo frosts yet., but I must move my geraniums into the mini greenhouse soon
DeleteI love ladybird books, although I don’t own any anymore ๐
ReplyDeleteStarting to see wisps of smoke coming from cottage chimneys nearby and my husband has been getting a pile of logs nearer to the back door - a sure sign of autumn .
Alison in Devon x
Yes, keep the logs close!
DeleteLots more Autumn colours showing in the leaves now and we have had a light frost over the last few days. I bought out my wooly hat and gloves this week too.
ReplyDeleteI dug out my warm winter jacket this afternoon, and walked round the corner to my friends house. There was a light drizzle as I walked back, I was so glad of my hood!
DeleteSkeins of geese flying in v formations overhead are a sure sign of Autumn here.
ReplyDeleteThey are so beautiful
DeleteSigns of autumn here, in my little corner of the world: several large wildfires in the surrounding areas, the peach tree starting to lose its leaves (while trying to flower at the same time, poor confused tree), earlier sunsets, and a chance of rain in the forecast! :)
ReplyDeleteThe trees here are confused too. I hope you do not have terrible wildfires again, Bless ๐ ❤️
DeleteMy figs have ripened in the last 2 weeks. I'm so pleased!
ReplyDeleteNrM sounds funny! There's an Essex trend of wearing clingy flesh coloured leggings with a short top I do a double take sometimes!
Glad about the figs. Yes I think those flesh-coloured leggings are slightly disturbing too
DeleteMy main sign of Autumn is that all the leaves from the house on the corners front hedges ending up outside my front door and all around our wheelie bins. There is obviously some sort of wind-tunnel effect going on. It carries on until his hedge is bare, which can take months.
ReplyDeleteThey get so slippery when it rains....๐๐๐๐
