Adventure and Adversity

hornblower Just caught a snippet of "Hornblower" on TV, with Ioan Gruffudd and Robert Lindsay.

It was an episode I had seen before, and just coming to the end of the programme.

There was a great quote, which I really must use in a sermon sometime. Pellew says to him

"When we put on this uniform, Mr Hornblower, we accept a life of adventure and adversity - but above all duty. Duty to our King and to our men."

A fairly good summary of Christian service, really. In act, I think there is probably room for a whole sermon series on Adventure and Adversity!

  1. That is a thought provoking quote, it could apply to all sorts of lives...I used to put on a Brownie leader's uniform and although maybe not leading to adversity, it was a bit of an adventure!

  2. I like the adversity that's combined with adventure--I'll take the first as long as I get the second!

  3. Thinking of some real biblical sailors, as opposed to fictional ones, I'm reminded of the saying "If you want to walk on water, you've got to get out of the boat!"
