Come Off It, Mr Marr!

andrew marr

Andrew Marr said [at the Cheltenham Literary Festival]

A lot of bloggers seem to be socially inadequate, pimpled, single, slightly seedy, bald, cauliflower-nosed, young men sitting in their mother’s basements and ranting. They are very angry people.

OK – the country is full of very angry people. Many of us are angry people at times. Some of us are angry and drunk.

But the so-called citizen journalism is the spewings and rantings of very drunk people late at night. (…)  Terrible things are said on line because they are anonymous. People say things on line that they wouldn’t dream of saying in person

Oh dear – poor chap – he is obviously reading the wrong blogs!

I am not sure he should have made those comments about ‘pimpled, bald, cauliflower-nosed young men’ – he is risking a lot of comeback about balding sticky-out-eared middle aged men! My ears stick out, I was once described as ‘looking like a taxi with the doors open’ – but comments about personal appearance are generally off-limits in the blogs I read. And although I occasionally blog very late at night [admittedly that is when I rant the most, online] I would never blog whilst drunk!

blog or not

I admit I don’t really like anonymous blogs – although I do understand why some of my friends choose not to be too easily identified.

I think that the majority of blogs which I read are written by people aged 30+, many of them involved in the Church, and many are  married.

I remember back in the days of A level statistics, a survey with the added information “These figures have been broken down by age, religion, and sex” Now if Andrew Marr had said that about the people who blog…

  1. That's a very sweeping statement from a somewhat pompous Mr M!

  4. I think Andrew Marr is lovely and probably made those comments quite deliberately just to instigate a debate. Did you know that his wife is Jackie Ashley, daughter of hearing impaired and disabled rights camapaigner the Labour politician Jack Ashley.

I often post comments anonymously after being threatened by a Southern Baptist Christian from South Carolina with a shot gun !! She had posted some racist remarks about President Obama which I objected to. Not that I would anticipate any unpleasantness from people on this friendly blog site.
