The Village Remembers

First of all, that board was carefully packed into my car, and then was put up in the church vestibule- so all those attending Sunday’s Remembrance Service were reminded to pray for our Armed Forces

The service was incredibly well attended, the British Legion were in attendance, and the Scouts were on parade too. Just before we began, Simon and I put out more chairs to ensure everyone had a seat [wish it was like that every  week!] The floral display was super

As part of the service we watched an excellent video clip from CVM, and we also linked in with the BBC to see the Queen laying a wreath at the Cenotaph, and share in the 2 minutes silence.

People seemed to really appreciate all that was said and done in Chapel, then many of us walked down to the Village War Memorial.

Another brief act of Remembrance, with the Last Post and Wreath Laying, and Roll of Honour read out. As well as the ‘official’ wreaths, many people place crosses – either for those who died in the War – or for those from the village who served in the Wars and have subsequently died.

I placed this one for Janet Guest, who came to Kirby Muxloe and served in the Land Army.

I did not know her – she married a GI and went to live in the USA back in the 1940’s. However she had asked that on her death, her ashes be interred in our village cemetery between the graves of her grandparents.

Back in July, following her death in America a little while earlier, around 30 friends and relations came from all over the world to the interment and memorial service which Bob conducted. I felt the family would appreciate it if she was remembered at the Village Memorial.

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old - at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them

Although I’d bought my paper poppy in support of the Poppy Appeal, I crocheted a couple of slightly more durable ones to pin on my new winter coat.

This morning at 11am we will meet again at the memorial for a brief service.

He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

  3. That floral display was gorgeous- and, as well as my Legion dues, I think I'll be making some poppies next year too!
