It will not always be like this,
the air windless, a few last
leaves adding their decoration
to the trees’ shoulders, braiding the cuffs
of the boughs with gold; a bird preening
in the lawn’s mirror. Having looked up
From the day’s chores, pause a minute,
let the mind take its photograph
of the bright scene, something to wear
against the heart in the long cold.
[A Day in Autumn, by R S Thomas]
What a beautiful picture the words paint! :)
ReplyDeleteI like the RS Thomas poem.
ReplyDeleteHave a good day - still raining here
Photographs of autumn (fall) in Canada usually depict a dazzling blue sky with red and orange maple leaves silhouetted against it. What is even more beautiful is to walk out on a damp day and see the amazing variety of colours along the roadside in the country, the bracken ferns transformed into yellow or bronze or dark brown, the small shrubs and wild plants whose leaves have turned, the various plants gone to seed, the lichens, the mosses, the mushrooms pushing up through dead leaves. Somehow the dampness enhances everything, even the trunks of the trees change their colour!
ReplyDeleteWhat a glorious description, thank you!!
