Inch By Inch, Row By Row

I have been taking advantage of the improved weather conditions to do a bit of gardening. A few seeds in pots inside the house, and my chitted potatoes out in the raised bed. I have removed the cardboard and replaced the string which delineated the sections of the bed. My 'biodegradable cotton twine' had disintegrated, so it is now replaced with some nylon cord which Bob had in the workshop. Bob reminded me of this lovely old Pete Seeger song

Inch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow.
Gonna mulch it deep and low,
Gonna make it fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row,
Please bless these seeds I sow.
Please keep them safe below
'Til the rain comes tumbling down.
Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones,
We are made of dreams and bones
Need spot to call my own
Cause the time is close at hand.
Grain for grain, sun and rain
I'll find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain
To the music of the land.
Plant your rows straight and long,
Season them with a prayer and song
Mother earth will keep you strong
If you give her love and care.
Old crow watching from a tree
Has his hungry eyes on me
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there.

Inch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow.
Gonna mulch it deep and low,
Gonna make it fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row,
Please bless these seeds I sow.
Please keep them safe below
'Til the rain comes tumbling down.

    1. I have two potato varieties- Casablanca and Vivaldi. Chosen for the non-gardening reasons that I like the film, and I like "the four seasons" !!

  4. How funny that your biodegradable twine actually broke down as promised! Good to know that it works, even if you did have to beg replacement twine. I love that old song.

  5. This is one of my favorite songs, too, but I first heard it when John Denver sang it with the Sesame Street characters. The boys and I sang it long ago when they were little. What a lovely, gentle memory. Ta!

    Hugs!

    1. John Denver sang some beautiful songs- and Sesame Street is a great programme. Yes, happy memories of small children singing cheerful songs together!
