She also gave me her knitting needles and patterns [sadly her Parkinson's has curtailed her hobbies]
Alwyn also passed on some things to Bob for the Men's Shed Project. They hope to get insurance soon, and start regular meetings after Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, I dug out my favourite apron and made my Christmas Cake this week. My usual GH recipe, but only half the size as I made in the past. Almond paste and icing to follow later!
Have you made your cake yet?
What lovely keepsakes. Our Christmas cactus has responded in the same way, and its beautiful. Good to hear that the Men's Shed will soon be happening, its proved to be a great idea. Love Isabel
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to see the blooms developing
DeleteWhat a beautiful gift-I cannot master crochet and many people have tried to teach me. Norrie is a founder member of our local Men’s Shed and it has been going for nine years now. The constant pressure is trying to seek funding as they don’t want to become a Social Enterprise. We successfully received money yesterday of about a third of what we asked for-I say we because I help him to do the funding bids! Catriona
ReplyDeleteWell done Norrie (&you) in getting a grant
DeleteMy Christmas Cactus sits on the kitchen window, it is a few years old and looks very sad and tired. However, after reading your recent blog re your cactus I looked closely at it and it has tiny flower buds on many of the leaves. Such a surprise, they are still tiny but I am hopeful that we may see flowers.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope so. Mine had the tiny buds before I started the dark & light regime and now they are all much bigger
DeleteYour cactus is looking good, the dark/light treatment seems to work well.
ReplyDeleteMen shed projects are such a good idea!
I saw on BBC news that Kate, Princess of Wales has been to Swanton Morley, driving an armoured vehicle, flying a drone etc.
She should have dropped in on you for a coffee!
Yes she was here, just up the road. She was served coffee in the officers' mess (much tidier than Angela's mess)
DeleteI bet your coffee's better though! X
Delete☕π☺️
DeleteYour plant looks lovely! I was recently given a cutting of one, but, I've identified it as a Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) going by the leaf shape (serrated edges with pointy bits at the ends).
ReplyDeleteNo cakes, here. I no longer make one.
We both like cake (too much!)
DeleteHooray for the Cactus growth! That tablecloth is lovely. X

DeleteYes, I've made our Christmas cake but it keeps calling me from the tin - pretty sure I will be cutting into it by December the 1st if not before!
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
My tin is labelled so it doesn't get eaten by mistake
DeleteLovely Christmas Cactus and hope it still has blooms at Christmastime!
ReplyDeleteWell done on the Christmas cake. Was it an easy recipe to make half size?
Hugs!
My recipe was for an 8" tin, I halved the recipe quantities and cooked it in a 6" tin, for slightly less time. That works fine
DeleteLove that table cloth — I have one my grandmother started and sadly never finished. I really like your Christmas cactus as well — I might have to pick one up and try again……
ReplyDeleteIt fits the table beautifully (with extension flaps down) The three line panels along the middle mean it's not all Crochet work. Maybe you could separate Grans crocheted pieces ans do some sort of inserted panel(s) down the centre. Use vintage table napkins?
DeleteNo cake, but admiring your cactus. It looks on its way to complete health!

DeleteIt's wonderful when the flowers bloom... good luck to you.
ReplyDeleteThe apron is wonderful, I have a similar one from my mom.
And I sewed two aprons for myself... maybe I'll put them in the blog :-))) It was a nice sewing job. And the patchwork blanket is great. Have you ever quilted... I have something in the works right now. It's fun to learn new things.
I'm looking forward to your hats and caps for your grandchild. I hope you enjoy designing and sewing... it's really a lot of fun.
Hug from me.
I have cut some pieces for quilting, but hope to do it in the new year
Deletep.s. the cake is with pickled dried fruits?
ReplyDeleteDried fruits, not pickled. Sultanas, raisins, currants, and cranberries
