On Tuesday, we decided to have a day out. Whilst Bob was in the shower, I went into the loft and filled a bag of stash-stuff. We popped across to Wymondham. At the Big C Craft Emporium, I dropped off some craft bits I had sorted out - wool and fabric I have no use for. I spent £2.10 [all my profits from Saturday!] on two cards, a set of metal dies, and some self-cover buttons. Then on the way out of the shop I spotted a knife. It was only 10p, but it was a gorgeous WMF stainless steel knife. It felt lovely in my hand, and I dashed back to the paydesk, "I am over 18 so I'm old enough to buy a knife" I said and gave the lady 20p for it. Here it is on the right, next to one of my regular knives. Slightly smaller, it will be good as a butter knife
Our wedding cutlery was called 'Celtic' in 1979, but inexplicably renamed 'Domus-Brasilia' 5 years later. I have eight 8-piece place settings plus serving spoons, salad servers, a pie slice, and a child's set [50p bargain]
What amazed me was that I found my new knife online, it is the Virginia pattern. I could buy this now from WMF in Germany for €30!** I got back to the car and found Bob admiring the 3 LPs he'd bought [he does love his vinyl collection] and we went on to the Wymondham Furniture Warehouse so he could look at old tools. He bought nothing, but I fell in love with a casserole.
OK, this one is brown, but it is pristine inside, and clearly never been used. And at £28, just one tenth of the price of the LC casseroles in John Lewis. There were matching casseroles and saucepans, all unused. I did not want them!
Having splashed the cash on fancy cookware, we thought lunch ought to be cheap and cheerful. So it was time to tick off something else on my 70s list, and visit Angie's Big Baps alongside the A47 [I've wanted to do this for ages]. The burgers were excellent. I very much hope that when her layby disappears as the road becomes a dual carriageway, they let her have a new pitch a little further along. I hope to eat there again. As Bob said, we have been to more expensive burger outlets and not had such good food!
That sounds like a brilliant shop. Our wedding cutlery is still in daily use too. I think food tastes better eaten with 'quality ' cutlery!
ReplyDeleteIt seems daft keeping it for "special" days. Every day is worth celebrating
DeleteWhen we cleared my dad's house for sale there was a lot of mis matched cutlery, some better than others. Some of the better stuff had actually migrated to the tool shed (along with several of the better towels) and were only good for the recycling centre (tip). None of this would have been allowed while Mum was alive! I discovered a four place setting which Mum had obviously saved "for best" and had been hidden away from oily hands seeking the nearest thing to prod things with!
ReplyDeleteJean.
Interesting things are discovered when you need to clear a property, for a move or a sale.
DeleteI meant to add that I have exactly the same brown casserole dish, given to me by my aunt, probably at least thirty years ago. It’s the perfect size for two people.

Le Creuset really does last a lifetime
DeleteMaybe the one knife got donated by mistake as someone was having a moving house clear out and ended up in a box of stuff. I say this because, when CBC and I moved quickly from our first rental house, I somehow lost one vivid purple Suede desert boot. I loved those shoes and I've never found the other one, 10 years on. So annoying as it's absolutely of no use to anyone and my one boot is useless!!
ReplyDeleteWhad did you eat from Angie's?
I like your casserole dish. The day sounds a nice fun pottery on in more ways than one!
I suspect your boot may be wherever Bob's best black shoe went!
DeleteI had ¼lb burger plus onions, Bob had ¼lb with bacon, cheese and onions. Properly cooked and very tasty
That sounds like an enjoyable day. Useful things found, good food eaten. I like the design of the knife. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteIt is very stylish imho
DeleteAsk The Borrowers!
ReplyDelete😂
DeleteI recognized the new knife as I love the design.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely. That was a very lucky day out for you both. I'd love to eat at Angie's Big Baps. JanF
👍
DeleteWow, a bargain knife. Isn't it good when a piece of cutlery feels 'right' in your hand, it's the same with a nice mug. Alan recently bought me a new one, I picked it up to admire it and it felt so good, he noticed and asked if I wanted it. Now, it's all I drink out of.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing you stood in front of 'Angie's Big Baps', I bet that's been a standing joke every time you have driven past there. There is a shop on our way into Morecambe called 'Susan's Pies' and we keep saying I need to go in there and buy a pie. Now you've made me want to all the more. :-)
Many many jokes!
DeleteOur original wedding cutlery (Viners) has no pieces left as we used them everyday much to my mother’s horror. We now use the cutlery she had for her Silver wedding in 1970 which I found in its original boxes when she died in 1980. It’s quite small cutlery and suits us fine. We even use part of the set in the motorhome and she would be horrified! Just glad that we have tasty food to eat with it. Catriona
ReplyDeleteYes indeed - For every cup and plateful, Lord make us truly grateful
DeleteIn our cutlery drawer we have two knives that do not belong there. We have no idea where they came from and no-one who visits us will admit to bringing them. They are completely different to our usual set-obviously we have a strange burglar who breaks in and leaves cutlery!
ReplyDeleteOh what a fascinating mystery
DeleteIf I was clever I could write the book!

DeleteIsn't it great when you can find lovely food without going into a high end restaurant?
ReplyDeleteOh yes!
DeleteMaybe someone donated an uneven number of cutlery and someone bought four or six place settings and this one knife was leftover. I'm glad you gave it a home in your cutlery drawer. :)
ReplyDeleteYou may be right
