Fifty Shades Of Grey?

Well, not quite, but a recent tidy of the airing cupboard revealed that my white towels were anything but. Look at this…

Now I know that the one on the top was never white to start with, but there are some sad looking ones in the heap, and quite a lot of variation in colour. I washed them on a hot wash, with a sachet of Dr Beckmann Glowhite [I had a voucher for it]

Some of these towels had mysterious stains on them, and at least one is over 25 years old. They are a mixture of hand and bath towels – but unlike bedlinen**, which is fairly predictable [single, double, king size] these vary enormously in their dimensions. I dried them naturally [no tumbling or conditioners] and here they are

They do seem to be more uniform in colour, and less grey than they were.

** I have noticed that pillowcases which were my Mum’s [ie 40+ years old] are quite a bit smaller than my newer ones. My M&S pillows don’t fit them.

Here’s a side-by-side picture.

Thank you Bob, who looked at the heap of towels and said “You could do a blogpost about that and call it 50 Shades Of Grey” – it will be interesting to see if such a title means it gets lots more views than usual.

  2. That's quite a change! Well done to.you and to Bob for his sense of humour!
We have a real motley collection of towels in a range of hues. CBC keeps moaning that we should get rid of them and buy a new, fluffy, matching set but then I use the 'need to save up for house' card so he doesn't go on! There is nothing wrong with the old ones, I quite like them being crispy!x

    1. Tell CBC that towel replacement cannot begin till you have passed your 8th wedding anniversary [which is "linens" - when you can purchase new household textiles]

  3. I have some white towels that are looking a bit tired - I will invest in some Dr Beckman now that I have read this as it does seem to make a different - thank you.

    1. I got mine online, but all the big supermarkets, and Wilko stock it. It works out at less than 40p a sachet. Less than 4p a towel isn't a bad investment.

  4. I have wondered about these whiteners, and may well try one for my towels, which being several years old are taking on a faintly grey look too. Like me.

    1. Your hair may be greyer - but you still have your inner sparkle!

  5. Wow that global bright stuff is brilliant! I think I might invest and do all the school and work whites at the end of each term.
    What a fab find!.

  6. I used one sachet and it did a full washload. I should add that I used the whites HOT wash programme- not the LOW temp one. Planning to use another of the sachets on Bob's white shirts and some of my dingy underwear. These items will NOT be posted on the blog.

  7. It certainly made a difference! Our towels are different colours though - still going strong after 30 years - they were wedding presents! Like Kezzie I prefer a slightly "crispy" towel to a soft-and-fluffy one. Mr FD prefers softer, so his towels are the thicker ones. I don't often use fabric softener though.

    1. I never use conditioner or softer. I think it makes the towels less absorbent.

  8. I had to laugh at the title and wondered if you would get more hits than normal. lol They certainly look less gray! There is something here in the states called OxyClean which does the same thing.

  9. Awesome improvement. Apparently using vinegar as a fabric conditioner does not make towels less absorbent but does make whites whiter. I've never been brave enough to have white towels but bear's school shirts have stayed white. Also I am putting Glowhite on my shopping list. xxx

  10. Towels used to last longer. We had our wedding gift towels for a long time.
    Bob's funny!

  11. Eye catching title!

I always use white vinegar in the rinse water for all laundry. It leaves everything including towels fresh smelling and much cheaper than commercial fabric softener. White vinegar is wonderful for cleaning as well. Simply dilute in a spray bottle with water.

  12. I am proud of my towel collection which contains some similar specimens to your 'before' collection. My favourite is a towel that has my Uncle's name embroidered (by my Great Granny i think) on it, for school. He is now 68 so the towel must be getting on for 60!

    1. No - the number of hits yesterday was about the same as it usually is! I think this may suggest that 50 SOG is old news now [which can only be a good thing]
