Pause In Lent #4

I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will feed and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees.
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you, and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.
[from Isaiah 66]

We so often speak of the Fatherhood of God - but Scripture has quite a few examples of God being described as a mother. Nurturing, caring, loving...these are all important qualities for us- and we are made in the image of a Great Creator who demonstrates these perfectly. We love, because He first loved us.

It is Mothering Sunday - I miss my Mum so much - it is 25 years since I was able to send her a card. But I am so incredibly proud of my daughter, now a mother herself. Liz has suggested you might like to see these pictures of Rosie. The first taken just an hour after she was born [proud Gran is quite overwhelmed as you can see]

Here is Bob holding Rosie on Tuesday [6 days old] He's good at this Grandad stuff.

And here we are outside her home in London - about to go with Rosie's happy, but tired, parents for a short walk around the block. [Liz knitted the wonderful little hat]

Not everyone finds Mothering Sunday easy - those who have lost mothers or children, and those who have always wanted but never experienced the joy of motherhood. But today I pray that the peace of God's love, and the comfort of being in His family will surround you.

  10. Congratulations to the happy parents and proud grandparents!
Thank you for writing about missing your mum. I still find Mother's Day hard even though it's thirteen years since I lost my mum, it just never gets any easier. Maybe it's the huge event that the day has become in modern times - dare I declare bah humbug and say it's become another overly commercialised opportunity to spend, spend, spend?
I miss her every day and this annual reminder that other people have mums to spoil rotten and I don't makes me sad.
