All My Eye And Betty Martin...

Does anybody use this phrase anymore? It was one my Dad used frequently, when told something he believed to be made up rubbish. Some claim it derives from a mistranslation of a Latin prayer, misheard by sailors 300 years ago - others say it refers to a mistress of Samuel Pepys. I have no idea...
But yesterday I went into a pharmacists to get some more dressings for my leg [healing nicely, thank you] and was intrigued by the ad on the wall outside. The photo isn't good, but I found more of the companies ads online...
The clear implication is that if you apply this wondrous cream to your wrinkly, baggy, right eye [before] , then, in just 30 seconds, you will find that it becomes a bright, smooth-skinned left eye [after],
Well, I know what my dad would have said!

  2. It was a favourite saying of my great aunt when she was told something she had difficulty believing, its a long time since I heard it though.

  3. I'm sure this saying was explained by Susie Dent on Countdown recently but can't remember what she said about it!

  4. It's a line which is central to Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence story "The Red House".
