Reading With Grandad

The family were up in Norfolk at the week-end. A lovely opportunity to catch up on all that we had missed over Christmas.

We went off to Sheringham, where Storm Malik was certainly blowing in. A blustery stroll along the Prom, and we even ventured down briefly onto the stony beach.

Jess happily wearing the 'emergency' hat I knitted for Rosie years ago. [pattern here]

I am now at the age wear I dress for comfort - so I put on my dungarees [practical for clambering about] and my parka [warm in the wind] Only as I got outside, did I realise that these two garments are almost identical in colour. Camouflage is a very useful thing sometimes- but not really a fashion statement!

When we got back into the town centre, we bought hot drinks and snacks, and sat in the little shelter under the clock

Rosie found a book. It was one left there as part of the "Norfolk and Suffolk Look for A Book Scheme" - this book was one from Miss Kay's Bookshop [a new local initiative]

Rosie sat and helped Grandad to read the book. Later in the evening, Rosie stayed with us for a sleepover, and she and Grandad enjoyed still more books.

She's snuggled up warmly in Steph's old dressing gown! And on Sunday morning, she turned the lounge into a pop-up book and toyshop. I am so thrilled that she shares our love of books.

  2. That makes me so happy to hear she enjoys books so much! I am sad about my niece who never seems to read anymore. She's on Tiktok all the time. That book scheme is a lovely one!

  3. I'm sure it's partly the teacher in us that rejoices at a child reading!! I still remember saying to a parent about their child "It's a shame he doresn't enjoy reading more"
They looked at me and said "Why?" I couldn't explain the pleasure reading gives...

  4. Precious moments with grandchildren. Both our children and grandchildren share our love of books and the fourteen year olds have their noses in books most of their spare time.

  5. I'm glad that we have so many inspirational teachers out there, like Alison & Kezzie, and the ones at Ro's school, who work hard to instill a love of reading in their pupils. And grateful too for friends and family members who take the time to read to/with these little ones.

  6. What a lovely photo of Rosie and Bob snuggled up with a good book, absolute happiness right there!
Our son and daughter in law are avid readers, and not surprisingly our grandson is rarely found without a book 'on the go'!
I was never a teacher, but I was a Librarian for almost forty years, so books are just a part of life in our house, as necessary as food and water!

    1. Librarians are very special people - Rosie was so upset when the pandemic meant closure of the library [so was I]

  7. I enrolled my boys into our local library as soon as they could flick through their picture books then did the same with the Granddaughters. It was always such a lovely way to spend the time and they got such a thrill from handing over their very own library tickets and having their books stamped.

    1. See my comment to Col above. Libraries are definitely "Use them or lose them" places. A valuable resource for any community

  8. One of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes: "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me." And time with grandchildren is never long enough. Glad you had such a delightful weekend.

    1. I am sure there are many adults now, who you taught to read years ago, and are grateful for that. I'm sure they are passing on the love of reading to their children...

  10. So glad to hear that you finally got a visit with those lovely grandchildren. I can see how they liven up Cornerstones for you!
We are still waiting to see our family but it may be soon. In the meantime we have at least had FaceTime visits.

  12. I was sad when I stopped putting my boys into dungarees - coinciding with that time of life where they might need to be quickly ready for the loo. I think I'm probably at that stage of life myself now.
