Lathing Around

Bob, fully recovered, has been busy in his Lathe Palace. This week he took a piece of "spalted" wood and turned a bowl. Spalting is when a fungus gets into the wood and leaves a network of random lines and patterns.
The bowl is 22cm across and 7cm high, with a small foot. In the centre is embedded a £5 coin showing the Queen's head. It's Jubilee Year!
I think it is rather beautiful. It will be a rather special wedding present for my niece and her husband.
I do hope the sun shines today for their celebration - they have had to wait two years for it.

  4. Wow!!!! That is beautiful!! Bob is very skilled! Is it a skill he's been practising for years? I'd love to see a blog post on Bob's history with this wonderful craft. Spalted wood is beautiful. Is it obvious before it gets cut that it is spalted? What did the piece of wood look like in its unlathed (?) state?
Congratulations to your niece and fiance!
Can't wait to see pics (inc your outfit!)

    1. It had a couple of dark lines, but you never know what will be revealed until it is turned. He got his lathe about 5 years

  12. What a beautiful bowl for a wedding present! I sometimes check the woodpile for spalted maple because it fascinates me. A neighbour of ours used to turn it and I have a vase that he made.

  13. This is fab, Angela! A super gift, and unique and special. My dad loved woodwork…he was self-taught. My family were rehoused after the war, moving from the East End to leafy Essex. Necessity is the mother of invention, and he could improve the family’s fortunes…building the rabbit hutches (much cheaper than buying ready-made, if you could get them), then building a frame and sliding doors into an alcove to give a double wardrobe. Also brilliant at salvaging and re-purposing…when I grew up I used to affectionately refer to him as ‘our own Barry Bucknell’). In later years and approaching retirement, he bought himself a lathe…and spent many happy hours in his own LP! Between us, the family have kept many items he made…I have couple of lamps, a lovely fruit bowl with a couple of different colour woods, a few trinket dishes. It’s really lovely when the woodturning reveals the different grains of the wood and their patterns. Bob has produced a lovely wedding gift…I wish you many happy hours in your LP, Bob! Enjoy!

  14. Hi Angela, I left you a lovely comment; sadly, I didn’t realise it was showing as ‘Anonymous’ so I now run the risk of being deleted…I am sorry, I don’t really know how these things work, I rarely comment on blogs, though I completely understand.

    1. Hi Wendy. I am guessing these are both your comments [Blogger seems to be messing people about a lot] Parts of my family moved out to Essex from London, and woodwork was a great hobby for them too. [I remember Barry Bucknell!] My friend's dad tried to save money by building a wooden hamster 'cage' - but Hammy gnawed his way out and escaped!!
