What I've Been Doing On Tuesdays...

Since February I have been volunteering at a nearby library. I was in the main library in Norwich back in November when I saw a poster asking for volunteers. Aylsham Library [15 miles away] wanted someone to run a Craft and Chat Group. I contacted them for details and put in my application. It took weeks to be processed [and the form for my referees was rather long and complicated] but I got the job. I think I was the only applicant!
Attendance has not been brilliant-just two women. There was a craft group pre-covid but the leader has moved on, and former members not returned.
We've made Kusudama Flowers. And cards
We are not meeting in the Easter Holidays, and someone has suggested we do cards again when we resume on April 17th.
The Library Staff are really encouraging, and say that numbers will improve. I do hope so

    1. I confess we do as much chatting as crafting - but that was the intention, to help people (esp those living alone) to build friendships. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate is free, and it's a warm and pleasant venue.

  3. That sounds like a lot of fun, but where do you find the time to do all the things you do?

    1. I probably do too much of things I enjoy, when I should be doing housework!

    2. And that sounds eminently sensible! FD xx

  4. I'd come along if I lived nearer! I used to go to the knit and natter group at my local library but it was in the evening then it disbanded at first lockdown and hasn't started up again. Is your group well advertised? A little reminder on the library's FB page might help.

    1. We have put up posters, and advertised on library FB site, and also local community social media. Hopefully numbers will improve, it's early days...

  5. That sounds like a brilliant thing to do, I'm sure it will pick up by word of mouth. Our local library runs various clubs virtually every morning and afternoon, in fact as it's such a small building you have to check to make sure you aren't going to quietly browse books while the toddlers reading and music session is on, although the happy laughter is lovely to hear.

    1. I am glad that libraries offer so much these days - Aylsham also has a children's craft session on Saturdays, an afterschool Lego Club, and a games evening, as well as the toddlers singing and story time

  6. I’d be there like a shot if I lived near the library. I love kusadama flowers and it’s a great way to give books which would otherwise be landfilled, a second chance to be something beautiful. Catriona

    1. I did tell the librarians beforehand that this was a book I found being thrown out as it had no covers and many pages missing!

  7. How wonderful that the Council want to support such an iniative and that you are just the right person to lead it. I would be there like a shot if the distance and my job did not get in the way. Nicky K

    1. It certainly ticked many boxes on my skillset. Some Councils show more support for such things than others [as you well know, Nicky!]

  12. Of course you know, it's not about numbers, is it? You are giving a few people a great, creative social time and making their lives better! I'm sure more will come soon, anyway.

  13. That's a wonderful thing to volunteer for, Angela, and I'd be there too if it was in my area. I love crafting and would really like to meet like minded people. Well done you. Fingers crossed that word spreads and you get lots more people soon.
