Suffering With Foot And Mouth

I'm falling to bits! After spending all that time and money on having the verruca on my heel dealt with, it has reappeared. And it hurts. I am not convinced it was completely removed last time. So this week I shall be visiting a different podiatrist. I had an appointment booked with the dental hygienist booked for May. The receptionist rang and said there was a cancellation, would I like Friday 26th April instead. It's a 50 mile round trip [look, this is Norfolk, I'm lucky to have a dentist at all] I somehow missed a turning, so had a slight detour, then got stuck for miles behind a very wide, slow agricultural vehicle, unable to overtake on narrow roads. I arrived 15 minutes late, and they said I was too late to be seen. "We can rebook for Monday and you won't lose your deposit"
Bob kindly drove me there - we left in good time, and arrived 40 minutes early for the 3.10pm appointment. The hygienist was running behind - I never got into the chair till 3.30pm! So I had been in the waiting room for a full hour. [Bob sat in the car listening to the radio and reading]
On Sunday evening, I did a lot of stitching on the project - I've completed the green edging - and I am now stitching the text in the border[names, dates, title etc] I drew everything out very neatly on graph paper - but I was too tired. I should have had the sense not to do any stitching after 9pm. As I finished the banner across the bottom, I realised I had counted wrongly - and everything was 2 squares out. I spent a lot of time Monday morning unpicking it all
My aim is to finish by May 19th [Pentecost]
As well as the border text to stitch, there are lots of ends to tidy up on the back. Generally I'm feeling very upbeat about our collaborative project.
[I have had fun with this blue plaque generator!]

  1. I distinctly remember you telling us that verucca salt (or even Verucca Salt) was now your go-to remedy!

  3. It's infuriating when stitching is out, even by a couple of stitches.

  4. So sorry to hear that you are having issues with your feet, again.
How annoying it must have been to drive a 50 mile round trip to the dentist's only to have it rescheduled because you were 15 minutes late! And then, you had to wait because they were running late!
I've learned not to work on any projects when I'm tired, because I always end up making mistakes or having an accident of some kind! Looking forward to seeing the finished project. :)

  5. Yes, when will I learn "more haste, less speed".?

  6. Oh dear such a long journey to your dentist but I know from my sister's experiences with dentists in Norfolk that's how difficult it can be. Veruccas what a nuisance for you. I can recall our sons suffering with them at different times they can be very persistent and painful. Working on any sewing, knitting or anything involving concentration when one is tired is nearly always a mistake waiting to happen isn't it? It will be lovely to see the completion of your joint collaboration. It has been a lot of fun seeing all the glorious needlework and ideas you have both come up with. I hope your day is calmer today. Regards Sue H

    1. It's 10am and I'm still in bed reading. A joyful perk of retirement!

  7. So annoying! The constant road works here in Norwich outskirts is infuriating. It has been months now.
As for stitching and unpicking. I often spend more time unpicking than sewing it seems! I hope that your project gets finished.
We don't have a dental school at the uni but I read that they are thinking of applying to be able to open one.

    1. The A47 road works at Honingham have just changed the sign, removing the number. Now it just says "delays expected for... weeks" which is rather disheartening (although I understand this will benefit the bat's!)

  8. Infuriating that there's no leeway on your lateness because of mitigating circumstances but it's ok for hygienist to keep you waiting so long! (Applies to other professions too!). Can't get my vintage sewing machine to work properly. Infuriated with that too! It's such a gentle relaxing machine to work with when it behaves itself!

    1. I had a lot of hassle with my old machine. It refused to do zigzag. Then i discovered the needle was not in place properly. Sometimes it's the simplest thing (and a proper service is upwards of £50 these days)

I'm so sorry you had to pick out your stitching. I find it to be such a tedious chore, but I feel ever so much better knowing that it's going to be correct and orderly in the finished project.

    1. I showed it to a friend yesterday morning, pre-unpicking. "it's only slightly wrong. And a lit of work. But could you live with it if you didn't fix it?" We agreed it would always bother me, and after a year of work it would be a shame to leave it uncorrected

    2. After my cancer diagnosis I started on a large project. When I found early on that I’d missed just one stitch but it caused a whole flower (three hours work) to be out of place and now touching another flower instead of having a gap between flowers I had to make the choice to leave it or tear it all out. I decided that I was the only one who would ever know and getting finished was more important than being perfect so I left it - while telling myself that if it bothered me when I was finished I could decide THEN to unpick and restitch. You’re right. If it will always bother you then you have to fix it.

  10. Off topic, but there is a new shop called One Fox opened by the author-illustrator Kate Read (it is named after her book One Fox, A Counting Book) in Aylsham with all illustrated things for all ages. I thought of you as soon as I saw it in the paper this morning so am passing on the information.

  11. I did feel for you over the wasted dentist trip - especially as they then kept you waiting the next time you were there!
I have grown more patient over the years but probably would not have put the stitching right, I don't think I have a perfectionist bone in my body but applaud those who do 😀

  12. One rules for the hygienist and a completely different rule for the patients it would seem. :-(

I love the blue plaque, I can see you having lots of fun with that.

  13. Verrucas can be very painful I've had one, so I commiserate. We can't get a dentist here so might have to go private if needed.. 50 miles whew!

  14. I am sorry to hear about the verruca. I have an odd way of dealing with them and I finally got rid of one which seemed to be around for decades (at one time my GP was dealing with it). I cut a small piece of duct tape and put it over the verruca (after soaking my foot and removing some of it). I put a plaster over, to hold the duct tape in place. I replace it all periodically. It actually worked in the end! Now I have another small one on the other foot to treat.

  15. You did very well not to react to the first appointment not going ahead. It’s always the same with appointments including the hairdressers-they can keep you waiting but not vice versa. I’m all Zoomed out today hence the late comment. Catriona
