Invisible Threads

Tomorrow is Mothering Sunday. No, I will not call it Mothers' Day. I'm grateful for all those who 'mother' others- whether actual family members [mums, grandmas, aunts...] or older. close friends, who care and support the younger generations. I'm truly grateful

  • for my Mum, an amazing woman who achieved so much despite so many difficulties along the way, not least very poor health. My greatest role model
  • for my grandmother who taught me so much - about faith, and good family values [and sewing]
  • for all those 'aunties' around me as I grew up, close family friends who cared for me, encouraged me, supported me
  • for teachers, youth leaders, and older work colleagues who gave invaluable advice and showed infinite patience
And now I am the grandma, with daughters, and grandchildren looking to me for love and support and care. During half-term week, I was so conscious of the strong bonds that hold our family together, the love between siblings, parents, children, grands... [women and men]
A couple of weeks ago, my blogfriend "Fat Dormouse" shared a beautiful song "Invisible Thread" by Neil Hannon [Divine Comedy] which is all about parenting. About loving your children with all your heart, desperately wanting to protect them from the bad stuff - but having the faith to let them fly. [Neil had me at the brilliant first line!]

"Invisible Thread"

I'm sewn into your collar, you're stitched into my heart
And though I know you've got to go, it's tearing me apart
You're stitched into my heart

Now go, spread your little wings and fly
Smile, you don't need a reason why
Leave if you've got to leave, just know
There will always be an invisible thread
Between you and me

I used to think that no one could keep you safe but me
That only I could guide you through life's crazy tapestry
But now you're guiding me

So go, spread your little wings and fly,
laugh, you don't need a reason why
Leave if you've got to leave, just know
There will always be an invisible thread between you and me

Everything's connected, the fibres intertwine
The birds and bees, the flowers and trees
And even you and I

And when the time is right we go
Spread our little wings and fly
Sing, we don't need a reason why
Cry if you want to cry, but this is not goodbye
There will always be an invisible thread
Between you and me     [Neil Hannon/Divine Comedy]

  2. What beautiful words, really moving. My brother, even from when he was a young lad, always bought me and my two sisters flowers for each of us on Mothering Sunday even before we were mothers. He said we had all been a "mother" to him after our Mum had died tragically early at 28. He continued to do this for the rest of his life, and I always think of him on Mothering Sunday, he sadly died 3 years ago. Regards Sue H

  4. I just love Neil Hannon and Divine Comedy. Always so well written. I must get myself a new CD player so I can listen to the albums I have.
His song Absent Friends is my favourite

  5. I agree Mothering Sunday is a much more appropriate term. So many other women played their part in me growing up, my beloved grandma, aunties and teachers at school. The song is particularly poignant.

  6. I'm going to print those verses off and put them into the card that I'll give my eldest Granddaughter when she departs for University. She'll be missed dreadfully by us all. Happy Mothering Sunday to you Ang.x

  7. Not everyone is fortunate as to have the sort of mother they would have liked. Mothers Day falls in May here and I was always glad when it passed. Spare a thought for those who had abusive mothers and cranky past it teachers (I went to an all girls school) and whose sisters resented you being on the planet. There was no mothering, just bad vibes.

  8. Mothering Sunday is the day I feel the loss of my mum more than any other time. After over twenty years I think of her every day, more with joy and fondness than sadness now.
That is a truly lovely film. X

  9. I'm with you on preferring Mothering Sunday to Mothers' Day or, even worse, Mother's Day. The latter two are very exclusive.

  10. Oh that is beautiful and so true. I hope you don't mind but I am going to "steal" this for my blog, as I had never heard of it. I was just talking to my mam the other day about the phrase "Mothering Sunday," being a British phrase. Happy Mother's Day to you Angela for tomorrow. Mother's Day in North America is in May.
