I Thought I Was Thrifty, But…

old lard

…this 87 year old German gentleman, Hans Feldmeier, makes me look utterly profligate and wasteful.

The pensioner received a tin of American lard 64 years ago in an aid package – and he has only just tasted it, after discovering that it is still edible! He had kept the tin ‘in case of emergencies’

He’s now a retired pharmacist, and decided to get the lard tested because of the debate about expiry dates and food safety. He ate the ‘gritty and tasteless’ pig fat on some black bread. There was no expiry date on the can [did they bother with EDs in 1948?]

A German food expert, Frerk Feldhusen, who also sampled the lard, said the test result might make some consumers think twice before discarding food immediately after the expiry date.

Which reminds me to mention Approved Foods again. [here]

Good food, great prices, reliable service!
