Bargain Hunt!

Since we moved, I have been trying to use my best Hornsea china at least once a week, if not more. It is sturdy and oven and dishwasher safe, so with reasonable care, I hope not to have many accidents! In the last 36 years, only one bowl has been smashed. When I am in Charity Shops, I always check the china shelf. In the past month, I have collected these pieces – for £5.50 the lot [from 4 different CS]

The bowls are a great size for individual cottage pies/lasagnes etc. I have never had the Cornrose salt and pepper, or an egg cup before. Jugs and jampots are always useful!

Bargain-Hunt-Tim-WonnacotOn the subject of Bargain Hunt – what has happened to Tim Wonnacott? Is he coming back to the programme? Or has he lost his golden gavel for good?

  1. I bought a six person coffee set with milk jug, sugar bowl with lid and coffee pot for 14.99 from the Oxfam shop in Leek a few weeks ago. I love it!
Actually what I thought was a lidded sugar bowl might be a jam pot...

  2. Just recently there has been a large storage box full of Cornrose in my local Age Concern shop. It was £34.99 for the whole lot which seemed like a bargain - dinner set, tureens, jugs etc. I thought of you each time I saw it!
When TW did Strictly last year some of the ' experts' stood in for him, so if those episodes are being shown that would account for him being missing.

    1. I have a self-imposed rule about not spending more than a couple of pounds on a piece. I am not sure I have room for a whole boxful- but I expect someone else has snapped up the bargain you spotted.

  3. It would appear that TW was accused of bullying and has in effect been sacked. They are going t use 'celebrity' presenters for the rest of the series they are recording. They did something similar when he was in Strictly last year.

  4. I will take note about using "the best china at least once a week". Why do we stash away our good china? I think I will try to do the same. All these years, I have only been taking them out for special occasions. Good post....good reminder !

    1. It is a good thing to use it and remember why we were given it - to celebrate our marriage - and to be thankful for all the blessings down the years. And just the act of using the best china makes the meal a 'special occasion'

  5. It is such a pretty traditional design.

  6. When I moved to Wales I gave everything but my best china away. I now use Royal Albert daily, it encourages me to wash up instantly and carefully. Mind you the dinner and tea service were only £15 together, from ebay.

  7. I can only speak as I find and about 12 years ago Tim W came to our house when a film was being made for a Carlton TV (as it was then) series, Treasures in the Attic (or something like that.) Tim had to come here and pretend to look at my 'attic' and find some things to talk about. A craft-person was also here to show the viewers how to make a decoupage vase. The next day the filming was at a fine arts' auction house in Exeter and Tim had to ask me what I'd choose from all the items on sale. I chose a little Liverpool coffee can (and I had to explain why I had chosen it, but because I know a little bit about antiques - I write about them for a monthly style magazine - I was cut rather short because it sounded like I knew more than the celeb, i.e. TW. However, overall, I found TW to be a very nice person indeed, very friendly and on occasion when I've been in touch with him for a quote for a piece I've been writing, he has obliged.

  8. I think I only have two bowls remaining but all the plates, cups and saucers, goblets. Smart to look in charity shops. I should try that.
I like what you chose all those years ago!

  9. One of my favourite designs from Hornsea. When I was a teenager mum and dad took us, at least, once a year to visit the factory. I loved seeing al the different designs. It's a shame it closed. The building is now used as a large antique/second hand emporium and clothing outlet.
