IncyWincy Removals Limited

I have often heard people mention September Spider Season, as that is apparently the peak month for arachnids in the UK.
🕷 But recently there have been an awful lot of them at Cornerstones. I lie in bed at night and say "Bob. look at that huge spider over by the wardrobe" and he [unbespectacled therefore unable to see anything much] says "I can't see it, darling"  But, give him his due, he will get out, put on his glasses, hunt around for a beaker and a postcard, and carefully entrap the eight legged creature, and dispose of it outside the front door. Usually muttering "It's not that big, Ang" I would do this myself, you understand, but they usually linger in high places I cannot reach. I am convinced they are about to scuttle to the spot on the ceiling over my head, and drop on my face in the night. There have been a lot lately, but mostly in the bathroom. Bob has decided to be prepared. I went to clean my teeth the other night, and spotted this at the side of the bath, tucked behind Sir Duckingham Place and his friends.

He has found a bit of packaging and a plastic trifle dish. And to stop me recycling them in the new black bin, he has labelled them properly [even down to his copyright symbol].

  1. Here chez nous ejecting all kinds of insects from the house is a many-times-a-day thing! Having a kit to hand is a really good idea!

  2. We have a humungous spider with a big shiny body that comes out and stares at me every night when I brush myteeth. It lives in the hinge of the small window where I can't reach. Husband has gone after if armed with spider trap, vacuum cleaner, brushes and EVERYTHING now I've mentioned it!

  4. Ha! I like Bob's style! I usually have to find something last minute for spider removal. I had an epic traumatic spider incident last Summer of which I have video evidence and a poetic recounting! Shudder!

  5. I think its the way they scuttle so fast that makes them a bit frightening! Could Bob patent the kit, do you think?

  6. I am not a fan of spiders although I know they do good. I too am vertically challenged and it worries me if an arachnid is positioned higher than me in case it falls on my head scream! We have a spider catcher from A**zon which works very well. September is the busiest time for large spiders here, and when I say large I mean it, but I have seen three quite big ones this last week since it has turned warmer. The best spider catcher was our old cat she ate them. Regards Sue H

    1. We have had three cats during our married life and only the last one did, she lived to age 20 so maybe they did her good? I think Bob's method is far preferable and kinder. Sue H

  8. I usually remove the spiders in our house and they really give me the shudders. We get them in the bathroom and I’m always amazed they climb up the bath without slipping! Catriona

    1. My grandmother's mantra - if you wish to live and thrive, let a spider run alive!

I find that spiders lurking high up can be encouraged to descend with a feather duster and can be dealt with quite easily when on the floor. My spider removal kit consists of a glass cup - the type which were used to serve frothy coffee before we started calling it cappuccino - and a CD in a plastic pocket. Card is too flexible and the blighters are apt to escape. Unless, of course, it is ginormous when I use a small glass pudding bowl and the CD. For reasons I do not understand, I am not at all bothered by daddy-long-legs.

  13. I am generally not bothered by spiders, but, daughter doesn't like them, so, trap them when they come within reach and release them outside.

    1. It is good that in most households, there is at least one confident spider catcher!

  14. Her in the Pacific Northwest we get giant spiders in late August/Sept. I have read they are the world's largest house spiders. I have trapping cups in several rooms and chuck them outside with a message " You don't know how lucky you are".

  15. I well remember the giant house spiders when I lived in England. I seem to remember reading that in the old days, people would wear chin straps while sleeping, to keep their mouths closed in case spiders fell down out of the thatched roofs! We have a "spider catcher" with a handle, a pyramid shaped plastic device with a sliding base. It works for anything that stays put long enough to persuade it to get inside. I also have a little paper cup and a piece of card on the bedroom windowsill for when the spider catcher is downstairs when needed. By the way, we do have big outdoor spiders here, called "Wolf Spiders". They are rather splendid and sometimes one will hang out in the compost bin outside. Once in a while they find their way into the basement. I found a huge scrunched up corpse of one near the wood box! In that state it was just over an inch, but alive it might have been 3 inches across. Their bodies are 1/2 long and they have striped legs! By the way I read that spiders don't like the smell of peppermint.
