Pot Luck

As I watered my orchids last week, I realised they were looking a bit pot-bound. So I read up on what to do and then purchased some larger orchid pots at the garden centre.

They were Stewart ones [and I was pleased to see they are recyclable]

I was even more pleased that afternoon to see some bushes laden with blackberries, and a tree covered in apples. And we had three empty pots in the car to collect our foraging.

There are two theories about the word potluck - one is that it has been in use in England for over 500 years [one of Shakespeare's contemporaries wrote of the luck of the pot but others claim
it came via the Native American word potlatch meaning food which is given away.
Either way, my orchid pots will yield a few potluck puddings! [the fruit has been replaced by the orchids - but I am now struggling to find bigger cache pots]

  1. Sounds like you are having great luck with those orchids!
What a wonderful thing to discover fruit ready for picking, just when you had some empty containers to receive the picked fruit! Looking forward to seeing what you make with the apples and blackberries you picked.

    1. Orchid skills entirely due to my friend Jenny's patient teaching. Freezing the fruit in small quantities - more space efficient than as preprepared pies

  2. Very few blackberries here, and the ones that are here are somewhat dry and small. I've managed to find a handful now and then to mix with stewed apple.

    1. That's sad. I think that the hot dry summer has affect the juiciness

  3. The apples look lovely. I really enjoy picking blackberries but I don't like eating them.

  6. I bought my Mum an Orchid a few months back not realising that she had never had an orchid before. Literally as soon as we left she re-potted it as 'it was root-bound' covering all the roots with a good layer of firm compost in a large pot, and then gave it an enormous drink. Needless to say it was dead when we went back the next week.

  7. Gorgeous orchids! Could you sew some cache pots from old jeans. We make loads of pot type things using the legs of jeans lined with old shirts etc. A bit of waterproof in the bottom and you’ll be sorted. Catriona

  8. How lovely to find both blackberries and apples. I looked out of the window this morning and saw a grey squirrel (rare here) rummaging in one of the berry patches. I guess any ripe blackberries will be gone today! It's always a race against the critters, but it is entertaining sometimes to see bramble leaves shuddering and then a chipmunk or bird appear out of them!

    1. We had blackberries and apples with custard this evening- and ALL the apples are now blanched and frozen. LOTS of crumbles expected this autumn!
