Sue In Suffolk is a very savvy shopper, especially when it comes to the regular boot fairs held in her neck of the woods. She mentioned once that she kept a list of 'things to look out for' and I decided to follow this idea when I am mooching round charity shops. During May, I was able to tick three things off my list.
I wanted to try out a craft idea which required electric tealights. [Dereham PBL Hospice Shop] Then I realise that my lovely slippers, although fine on the outside, are getting a little worn inside. I wanted some decent insoles [not cheapo £shop ones, which are a waste of money!] I actually found pukka Cherry Blossom ones
[Taverham PBL Hospice Shop] Finally I decided I needed a new jigsaw, as all of the ones I had have been passed on to the CS. This was a bit more complicated - I didn't really know what sort of picture I wanted. Then we were with Julian at Sheringham and I found one in the Salvation Army shop. A Jigraphy CityScape Map
So I spent £5 on about £25 worth of goods. Bargain!! And in the wonderful way that things happen, I have just been given a carrier bag full of lovely jigsaws. They merit a post all their own.
One thing still on my list, is a 4th Penguin Book Cover mug, I have three [pink, blue and orange] I am on the lookout for just one more [in red, green, purple, yellow or turquoise] so that my everyday mugs match. The first three only cost 50p each - but I haven't seen any in CS since the pandemic, and I am too mean to pay full price!
That puzzle looks jolly difficult - Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep an eye out for your mug!
Thanks Sue
DeleteLove it when you find a CS item you wanted anyway. It's funny you should say that... It almost happened on Friday. I've been seeing these adverts for Celtic and Co leather fisherman sandals on Insta and whilst I don't need new sandals, I do think they look really nice and comfy. Lo and behold, I saw a pair in the charity shop in Hexham for a fiver. Sadly, not my size but how strange and coincidental! The jigsaw looks complicated! Xx
ReplyDeleteI have some lovely Moshulu sandals. Most comfy I've ever had
DeleteMy Dad went to carboots most weekends and always carried a small notebook with a list of 'wants' given to him by all the family. We found the notebook after he died and my husband now uses it to record what he sells at carboots. I think my Dad would approve.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite mug is a green Penguin Casebook of Sherlock Holmes one bought for me by my daughter. I didn't realise that there are different coloured ones. Interesting...
I cannot remember what all the different colours signified. I think green is "crime"
DeleteI think it is a great idea to keep a list of wants for possible buys at charity shops/boot fairs. I managed to find several Ladybird books I wanted like that a few years ago. Hope you find a Penguin mug to complete your collection. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteMany places really overprice their Ladybird books these days
DeleteThose are some really good bargains and I'm absolutely going to steal that idea! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI borrowed the idea from Sue.
DeleteIt's a really good idea to have a list of the things that you want to find, and it gives you an excuse to call into lots of charity shops too, just on the off-chance. I used to have a list of books that I wanted to find saved on my phone, but it fell a bit by the wayside for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI am trying hard not to buy any more books.
DeleteI'm also trying not to buy books, unless they are for Iris. Fell down a Google hole with Penguin mug colours, orange - general, green - crime, cerise - travel, blue - biography, yellow - miscellaneous, red - drama, purple - essays, grey - world affairs. Hope that helps. Xx
ReplyDeleteWow , I didn't know there were that many!
DeleteIt's only a bargain if you really need it!! Great news today, my eldest Granddaughter rang to tell me that she's been made Dux of her school (the s are you get for having the most academic achievements of the whole school. Her name will go on a huge wooden board in gold letters for eternity. It's going to take her days to come down off Cloud 9! Can't tell you how proud I am of her!
ReplyDeleteOh well done GD. What a great achievement. You are rightly entitled to be proud of her. And you're part of the upbringing and heritage which has helped along the way. Great congratulations all round ππππ
DeleteSue idea of a list is certainly worth adopting. I keep a list on my phone but a notebook would probably be better. Well done on your finds. Catriona
ReplyDeleteOh for the days when there was always a filofax in my bag!
DeleteYou found great bargains on things you had wanted!

DeleteI think a jigsaw Cityscape map would be an interesting challenge. I love that yours turned out to be from Norwich!
ReplyDeleteHoping to start it soon, now the children are not around
DeleteI think a skill that I would like to develop is being a savvy charity shop/ car boot shopper. Everyone always seems to get such interesting stuff.
DeleteTHAT is your retirement hobby sorted then!
