Julian came to stay for a couple of days, which was wonderful. As ever he was really helpful, lifting things and shifting things. On Friday afternoon, Bob was feeling a little stir-crazy after his bad eweek. We went over to Thetford for the afternoon once I got back from my volunteering at Dereham Hospital.
Lunch in Tall Orders was delightful. Portions were generous, salads fresh, staff friendlyWe walked round to the Ancient House Museum, passing a WW2 Sentry** - and once inside, Bob put on a helmet and became a Viking soldier!
We went in search of an icecream, stopping to sit briefly with Captain Mainwaring [it had to be brief, the bench was Very Hot!]A local business has built a loco plus tender, another company donated paint, and the gardening club from the secondary school have planted it up. There are planters and hanging baskets all over the town. They have clearly tried very hard - I hope they win!
We came home via Beck's and had a chippy tea. A great day all round!Isn't the sky amazingly blue?
Do people put out lots of floral displays in public spaces where you live? They take so much watering in this very hot weather, and wilt so fast!
**the TV series Dad's Army was filmed here - sadly the Dad's Army Museum only opens Saturdays and occasional Sundays.
Wheeler the sculptor's "conceit" certainly had me thinking and searching!
ReplyDeleteThank you - I'd not searched hard enough, but you cracked it. Wheeler the sculptor placed the book upside down as a "conceit" to get people talking about Paine, and his writings.
DeleteA 'grand day out' ; to quote another favourite tv programme!
ReplyDelete😉
DeleteAh, lovely you enjoyed such a filled day. I didn't know D A was filmed there! I do need to explore Norfolk more!
ReplyDeleteA chippy tea sounds great too!
Definitely come to Norfolk more, Kezzie, especially my part, so you can call in!!
DeleteWhat a splendid time. Thetford is looking blooming. We have a lovely park in the centre of town which has won many awards for all sorts of things and our local In Bloom team all volunteers do lots of magical work there and around town. Several years ago traditional carpet bedding along the sea front was removed and we now have much more modern, low maintenance gardens with perennial plants that like seaside conditions which we live but there were a lot of complaints at the time. We have a lot of stick in the mud here!
ReplyDeleteI listened to a woman talking about "municipal floral displays" only last week, praising 'forward thinking councils' who are opting for drought tolerant ,is maintenance bedding. Your town is clearly ahead of the game on this one! 😁
DeleteI've just remembered that one year Crawley (near us) decorated one street with laminated pictures of flowers drawn by children at a local infant school, which looked cheerful all summer and didn't need watering!
DeleteHow gorgeous
DeleteI loved Dad's Army. It was such a British show. Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteIt was fun (but very much "of its time")
DeleteThat looks like a lovely day out. :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, our town is awash with floral displays we have won the local Best Small Town in Bloom award so many times we are being entered into the national competition this year. The guys that look after our floral displays and flower beds are called the Garstang Bloomers. We also have large pots and hanging baskets outside most of the shops on the High Street.
Garstang in bloom has a good FB site. Good to see a community working together
