If you have not read Bishop Mariann's sermon from the National Prayer Service, I urge you to do so [here] If you do not have time for that, the gist of it is in the verse above from the prophet Micah - Justice, Mercy and Humility.
Unlike the President, I do not consider her words nasty, or boring. She was preaching from the Bible - and I do not feel she was disrespectful, saying as she did "Let me make one final plea, Mr President. Millions have put
their trust in you. As you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the
providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have
mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now."One Republican Congressman has already demanded that she be deported. Fox News dismissed her words as "the rantings of a lunatic"
All I can say is "Lord have mercy"
A woman of clarity and courage.
ReplyDeleteAmen❤️
ReplyDeleteHoping that one day Trump will have a change of heart is too much to hope for but saying the truth is all we can do. This now takes some courage.
ReplyDeleteThose in power anywhere will do anything to suppress truth and stir up fear, and many more are afraid for their lives and livelihoods since this week.
Sad but true...
DeleteIt's very concerning, the way anyone who speaks out against President Trump is treated.
ReplyDeleteI hope our PM hasa good phone call with him this afternoon
DeleteThat man and his circus don't know the meaning of the word humble. The whole world's on edge because of them.

DeleteHer sermon was beautiful. Anyone who is a true Christian would have agreed with her words entirely. That the felon describes her as "nasty" or "boring" is ludicrous but exactly what one would expect of him. I admire the Bishop for her truth and courage.
ReplyDeleteI admire her too
DeleteHer words were so powerful. The Republicans who were affronted clearly didn't listen.
ReplyDelete😥
DeleteBlogger ate my comment. Ithought it was powerful and find it sad that they missed the point through their own hatred
ReplyDeleteIt is such a shame
DeleteIt is a sad commentary on our times when Christians think asking for mercy is nasty. I suppose those at Fox news think Jesus was a "ranting lunatic." I wrote the Bishop a thank you note, as many others here are doing.
ReplyDeleteCelie that was a lovely thing to do. I understand she has received a lot of hate mail - so letters like your will be a balm and a blessing for her. 💜
DeleteI listened to her sermon earlier this week and side by side was a video of his expression throughout, he alternated between looking bored and quietly furious. She was right to speak out x
ReplyDeleteI agree
DeleteI hadn't read the entire sermon, but this morning the priest recommended that we read the whole thing and he said that it was prophetic. I had only seen part of it before and I was glad to read it all, because as a whole it encapsulates the truth of Christianity, whether certain people like it or not. I do admire the bishop's courage in telling it like it is! We need our Christian leaders to be respectfully strong and forthright, just as she was.
ReplyDeleteWe certainly do
DeleteI, like Trump, do not believe in a god. Taking any references to a god out of her speech, I agree with most of what she said.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. It is right that people of all faiths and none should recognise the need for mercy and compassion for those in need.
DeleteThe Bible is full of stuff like 'judge not lest ye be judged' and 'get rid of the beam in your own eye before the mote in your brother's eye' and 'care for the orphans, the widows and the strangers at the gate' and 'let him without sin cast the first stone'. And when Abraham was talking with the angels and pleading with the Lord to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if they found just ten good men good men - and the Lord agreed.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine those parts of the Bible being unpopular in certain circles in America.
Thank you for sharing.
👍
DeleteI might be more sympathetic if she was not a rather notorious Trump hater and self-proclaimed activist. Most of us who have worked in certain jobs have had to welcome people that we may not have agreed with or particularly liked - however, if they are a guest they should be treated as such. She was supposed to be delivering a service of unity and peace and instead she chose to lecture and embarrass her guest - and then she went on a rather self-serving tour of the MSM outlets.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't completely disagree with what she said - I don't think it was the time nor the place.
I'm concerned by the phrase "Trump hater". I hate sin, I hate injustice, I hate cruelty, I hate violence, but I hope I never hate my fellow human beings, and I think the Bishop would say the same. But I will publish your comment because it would be wrong to only print the ones supporting her..
DeleteI didn't use that phrase as though it came from me - this is from the Bishop herself - there are a number of instances on Youtube where she states her position quite openly and that is why I was surprised that she participated in this service. I support her right to campaign against things that she sees as unjust I'm just a bit hesitant about her ways of going about them - in this case I think it was rather self-serving. Sometimes we have to tone down our personal opinions in order to better achieve our long term goals and to better aid those we have concern for. I think she would have accomplished more by being a bit more gracious and presenting her stance more privately to the president instead of embarrassing him - I don't think any of us would have felt especially motivated to discuss options with her after being treated in this manner. Perhaps a time when she would have caught more flies with honey etc....
DeleteThank you Margie for these clarifications. You have much more knowledge of this woman than I do. Forgive me if my initial response implied that you were responsible for the "Trump-hater" phrase. And I take your point about due consideration of just HOW we choose to make our point about injustice etc. I continue to pray for unity and peace in our troubled world, as I am sure you are doing too ❤️👍🙏
DeleteIt takes a person of courage to plead for mercy on behalf of others, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt does
