My "Word For The Year" came to me back in November. I volunteer every week at the local hospital, and I have to log my hours using the online site of Voluntary Norfolk, on a page titled "My Impact". I think they are encouraging us to understand that whatever we do, even if only an hour a week, can make a difference - to other people to the community - and to us volunteers as individuals.
The dictionary offers five definitions of this word
1. the act of one body, object, etc striking another; collision
2. the force with which one thing hits another or with which two objects collide
3. the impression made by an idea, cultural movement, social group,
Verb
4. to drive or press an object firmly into another or of two objects to be driven or pressed firmly together
5. to have an impact or strong effect (on)
Some of these can sound quite negative - but there is also a positive aspect to impact. Yes a health issue, or a sudden financial drain, or a broken relationship can have a bad impact on us. But other things, an unexpected gift, a bright sunny day in the middle of a dreary winter, the renewal of a friendship, a hug or smile... these things can have a good impact.
The graphic, with its Newton's Cradle imagery. implies force, and the definitions include words like collide, hit, drive, and press. Impact can be strong, and maybe unpleasant. But even soft words can make a difference, and have an impact. 45 years ago, the first British TV series to feature a female detective was called "The Gentle Touch" - the idea that sometimes it was better to go gently than plough in with brute force.
What things may have an impact on us? Weather, TV programmes, health issues, world events, books, politicians, relationships [and for me personally, reading the Bible and listening to sermons]
And how do we impact others? By the way we act and speak - and also how we vote, how we spend our money, how we share our time with other people.
The ball swings down and hits the next in the row on Newton's cradle, and the force travels along through the others suspended, until the end one swings up. There is a 'knock-on' effect. Sometimes in life, the original force is magnified like ripples on a pond - and the final outcome is much worse
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
At other times, the impact of one small action grows into something huge and good. Rosa Parks sat down on the bus in 1955, Moina Michael pinned a red poppy on her coat in 1918 - you can think of other examples
This year I hope I will take the hard knocks which will inevitably come, but try to ameliorate their effect and not pass on too much negative impact to the next in line - but also try to ensure that I can do good things which have a positive impact on those around me
Well, you're certainly one for making an impact! I think it's a very interesting choice of word. (There is always a reaction to an action; watch out for yourself!)

ReplyDeleteI realize I never really thought of the word impact as one with a positive or gentle meaning... ! In the media it seems to appear a lot when ecology is mentioned, but maybe it's not bad to remember it can be relevant in our everyday lives too... Thanks !

Thanks for your comment Maguy. It is easy to get despondent and feel these issues are Too Big - but if each of us does our bit, then our combined impact can make a difference.
DeleteI was wondering yesterday what your word of the year would be. I'd never have guessed "impact" but will look forward to hearing how it pans out.
ReplyDeleteMe Too!
DeleteYou make a positive impact with your blog and sometimes give me much food for thought. When I was asked why I volunteer, my answer was that I hoped I could “make a difference”. I suppose this could be described as having an impact. I spent all yesterday afternoon sorting out craft supplies ready for the class to start at the end of January so that it can make use of what I already have. May just do some more sorting today-fabric this time. Happy weekend and hope your throat isn’t too bad for giving the sermon on Sunday. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI am sure all that you, and Shedman, do in your community does have a positive impact. And your bright, positive attitude is , in itself, impactful. [sorry, that is an ugly word- I should have said 'makes a real difference to others']
ReplyDeleteYou constantly make an impact Ang and I think it is a great word. Your post is so well written. I would hope to make such a good impact in life as you have done. X
ReplyDeleteYou make a very significant impact on many young lives at school, and I suspect on your colleagues too
DeleteThat is a very good word, and a good way to look at it in the positive sense. Both you and Bob must have a massive impact on the people you come into contact with, both through the church, your volunteering and the Men's Shed.
ReplyDeleteWe have been really pleased with the way the Shed Project has taken off so well
DeleteI love that focus, Angela, and I agree with what others have said. You are making a wonderful impact on people around you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Terri ❤️👍
DeleteYour last paragraph says it all. Impact is a very good choice of word. JanF
ReplyDelete👍❤️😊
DeleteI think your word for the year is just brilliant and I love your reflection including the informative graphic to illustrate a point. Many blessings to you both at Cornerstones this forth coming year xx
ReplyDeleteAnd a Happy New Year to you and yours 👍😊❤️
DeleteImpact is a positive word, and already you have been making an impact on those of us who read your blog!
ReplyDeleteI have chosen two words for this year, Charity, as described in 1 Corinthians 13, and obedience, trusting God in situations where I would rather have my own way and make my own rules.
Two beautiful words there, Bushlady. May God give you the grace and strength to be obedient to him, and filled with charity throughout this coming year. Be blessed,, and be a blessing
DeleteThat's a wonderful word of choice for the year and as others have said, you do have an impact on a lot of people, through your blog, through your community services. and through your daily interactions with others.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bless
