A Taste-full Rainbow

I just think this produce is so beautiful - a rainbow of colours from my trip to buy fruit and veg this morning.

peppers, apples, tomatoes,
grapefruit, onions, oranges, squash,
melon, pepper,
fennel, celery, celeriac,
pine nuts, cauliflower,
basil, savoy cabbage, cucumber,
courgettes, cress, salad leaves,
beetroot, red onions,
aubergines, blueberries, currants

We are back on the Blood Sugar Diet again - we both want to lose a bit more weight. Bob will call it the Nazi Diet [it is a bit strict I admit] even though I was sure Michael Mosley was no relation to Oswald [Blackshirt Fascist] Mosley. I have checked MM, and in fact his grandfather was a bishop, and he refers to his grandmother as a loving woman with a strong faith.

If we are dieting, and eating more veg, less meat, and minimal carbs and sugar, I want to make sure that we have variety and flavour.

I have one question, which somebody out there may be able to help me with - before Christmas, I read a recipe involving chestnuts. So I bought a bag of them. but I can't find the recipe or remember the other ingredients. I know it was a 'meat free' savoury dish, and I think I read it in a free supermarket Christmas magazine [Co-op, Tesco, Waitrose...] But they all got recycled. Does anybody recognise this? or can you suggest a good savoury recipe requiring chestnuts please?  Thankyou!

  1. I've used chestnuts in a nut roast and in parsnip and chestnut soup but both recipes were from my own head.

    1. I'd like the soup. Bob's not keen on parsnips

  2. Perhaps it was a Nut Roast type meal? I also use crumbled chestnuts in stuffing.

  6. Fabulous selection. You do know that if you're on any type of blood pressure meds, grapefruit should be avoided? I'm kind of housebound at the mo so no trips out at this time. I fell downstairs a week past Sunday and broke my ankle in three places! Now sporting a rather unattractive big black Moonboot while the metal plates and pins they inserted into my ankle settle themselves. Sutures removed next Thursday should provide a bit of relief from endless pain in my leg!

  7. Oh Anne, so sorry to read of your fall. What a start to the new year! I'm sure the family have rallied round in support. Hope the pain eases soon. Not on blood pressure meds, but both on statins. So a shared pink grapefruit once a month is an allowable treat. (Autocorrect tried to make that a PUNK Citrus!). Get well soon 👍♥️🙂🍰

  10. Those recipes sound delicious. I have only seen "live" chestnuts in our supermarket (still needing to be shelled). Perhaps there are some canned ones lurking on the shelves!
