Marvellous Mini Makes

It is nearly twenty years since I began knitting mini Christmas jumpers to decorate the tree, and ten since I posted the pattern on the blog. But this trio is made in 4ply yarn, and the three cable columns require a fair bit of concentration.
I've written a much simpler pattern which I'm using to make jumpers for my 31:13 shop. Here's a stack of seven jumpers which I knitted while I was down in London. When we got home, I pressed them and stitched the side seams.
Then I added contrast stitching and Swiss Darning, and added a few beads and sequins. Simple motifs work best - snowflakes, trees, wreaths, reindeer, and just rows of stitching.
Here's the pattern. You need a pair of 3.25mm[UK #10] needles and about 5gm double knit yarn.
Cast on 13sts.
Work two rows in K1, P1 rib
Work 12rows in stocking stitch
Cast on 8sts and beg of next row. [21 sts]

Cast on 8sts at beg of next row [29 sts]
P 29sts

Cast off 8, K to end
Cast off 8 P to end [13sts]
Work 12 rows in st st
Work 2 rows in K1, P1 rib.
Cast off.
Fold in half, press, sew up side and sleeve seams
Decorate as required [I use 6 strands of regular embroidery floss for stitches, 2strands to stitch on beads]
That's it!

  2. Thanks for the pattern, I might give them a go as I would not be able to concentrate on doing a adult jumper! Lesley

    1. They are so simple to decorate too. I've been using up red and white wool, but any colour would look festive I think. I found stripes too fiddly - easier to stitch a contrast row on afterwards

  4. They are super cute, I'm so slow at any knitted project, no matter how small, that it would be next Christmas by the time I'd finished!!!

    1. I had to do some Crochet for a badge in Girls' Brigade. I made a pair of tiny baby bootees for a newborn at church. He was almost walking by the time I finished them! Rosie has a lovely jumper made by her great aunt - originally started around 1988 for Ro's Dad and finally completed last year! You are not alone!

  6. They are lovely and knitting on two needles, they would be easier to decorate particularly with your lovely embroidery before doing the seams.

    1. I have decorated some of them before sewing up the seams - and others afterwards. It can be a little fiddly on the finished items!

  9. Having such trouble stitching up the cardi I just finished knitting. No matter how hard I try, neatness evaded me. Might try this little project as a diversion.Love the embroidery on yours.

    1. This project is very forgiving - I completely messed up the rib at the neck on one of these, but used matching wool to blanket stitch round. And it is neater than it was, but barely noticeable
