Hands up if you have ever stood by the window on a grey autumnal morning, with a pair of tights in each hand, and tried to work out which was black and which was navy? And then decided they were both the navy [when you actually wanted a black pair that day] A friend asked me last week if I could help her out by making some tights storage bags, so she could sort them all and keep the colours separate. She wanted 3 bags, black, navy and brown. About A4 sort of size - not too big, not too small.
Solution: I thought it would be dull to have black and navy bags, so instead I found three pieces of fabric and fastened them with black, blue and brown buttons.
A simple flat bag, the top folds over about 1½" and fastens with two button&loop closures. Here is the complete set
The buttons indicate the colours inside. My friend was really pleased- and said I should consider selling them in the shop!
In case you are wondering, this is some fancy curtain fabric [Sanderson I think] which came from a sample book which my SIL gave me [thank you, D!]This pattern came in three colourways - exactly what I needed for a project like this one.
Now I am considering making myself a set for my own tights - with a fourth bag for the crazy colours [red, green, purple, turquoise etc]
The actress Una Stubbs once said she rolled her tights into balls and kept them in a pretty basket on her dressing table. I tried this for a while - but it didn't solve the black/navy problem and my basket somehow always looked untidy!
Clever idea. I don't have this problem - never wear tights!
ReplyDeleteThat's one way round the issue!
DeleteThe bags with their different colored buttons are nice! I can see them being a good item to sell on your shop. I don't wear tights, but, I think I still have the pair I wore when I took ballet classes! Maybe something I should declutter!
ReplyDeleteYour continued decluttering is a challenge to me Bless, I must throw out more stuff!
DeleteI have been asked many strange questions before but nothinjg remotely like that one.
ReplyDeleteI made little fabric baskets in relevant colours using Louleigh’s pattern which is available from shoplouleigh on Etsy. They sit nestled in the drawer and work perfectly for me. It was my very first retirement project
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good retirement project, with a successful result
DeleteI have a plastic box with tights in and they are a mess!! Kx
ReplyDeleteUncontrolled tights do seem to plait their legs together if left alone for too long!
DeleteMy tights are All whacky colours from Snag !
ReplyDeleteSnag tights actually fit my short plump legs, unlike many other brands
DeleteLikewise!
DeleteI arrived at work wearing all black except I noticed when I arrived my tights were navy blue!
ReplyDeleteThat's a very chic French style, so don't worry
DeleteI'm lazy, my tights are in plastic freezer bags, with the colour written on the label!
ReplyDeleteThe 'out there' colours are mixed in a bag of their own, like a bag of dolly mixture sweeties! X
Oh I love the "dolly mixture" label
DeleteI only wear navy so dont have the problem! What a good idea to use the buttons as markers.
ReplyDeleteMy button stash remains huge...It was fun sorting 3 pairs in appropriate colours
DeleteThis is an excellent storage solution for dark tights-well done on another zero cost project. I’m sewing glasses cases today then trying to make a dolly pin nativity. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI was looking at DP nativities on Pinterest only yesterday. ...
DeleteI rarely wear tights these days as I'm always in jeans or trousers but thanks for the Snag tip - I too have short, plump legs!
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Just ignore the new bit of the Snag Site (it's a bit Ann Summers...and definitely not cold weather clothing!)
DeleteBrilliant solution!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
👍
ReplyDeleteI like that fabric — very retro, mid century modern! Reminds me of Sputnik!
ReplyDeleteI like MCM styles too - and you are right, very Sputnik! I love the Lucienne Day designs from the Festival of Britain in the 50s
